As a long-time fan of the crossover fighting game genre, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the return of Marvel vs. Capcom. For years, it seemed like our dreams of new installments in this iconic series might never come true. But lately, Capcom has surprised us all with not one but two exciting announcements.
Previously, it seemed unlikely that we would witness the revival of the Marvel vs. Capcom series or any of Capcom’s crossover fighters in the near future. However, things have taken an unexpected turn. Last week, Capcom unveiled Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, and more recently, we were surprised with the release of SNK vs. Capcom: SVC CHAOS. These re-releases have sparked renewed excitement among fans of the Versus series, raising hopes for potential new installments. It appears that Capcom is also considering this possibility.
In a recent interview with Dextero, Capcom’s Shuhei Matsumoto shared that there are ambitious plans within the company to create new crossover fighting games featuring Marvel or SNK characters in the future. However, Matsumoto cautioned that if such projects materialize, they won’t be happening soon as development will take a considerable amount of time. To keep fans engaged in the meantime, Capcom is continuing to release updated versions of their “Versus” line of fighting games.
“According to him, Capcom’s development team harbors grand ambitions. There could be potential for a new installment in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. Likewise, a fresh collaboration between Capcom and SNK is also a possibility.”
Based on my personal experience working in the video game industry for over a decade, I can tell you that creating and releasing new games, especially those with complex mechanics or based on older technology, takes an immense amount of time, resources, and effort. However, as someone who has also witnessed the joy and excitement that comes from introducing classic games to new audiences, I strongly believe that this is a worthwhile endeavor.
As someone who has been a dedicated gamer for years, I can confidently say that we, as a community, have the power to bring attention to lesser-known game series. These series may not be as popular or well-known as some of the heavyweights in the industry, but they hold unique charm and potential.
As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that starting today, I can jump into the fray with SNK vs. Capcom: SVC CHAOS on my PS4, Nintendo Switch, or PC. For those who crave more, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is set to drop later this year on the same platforms. Let’s get ready to rumble!
