As a long-time video game collector and enthusiast, I can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief every time I hear that publishers like Capcom are committed to continuing physical releases. I remember growing up with stacks of cartridges and CDs lining my shelves, each one holding a piece of gaming history that I could hold in my hands and cherish.
For video game enthusiasts, the future of having tangible media for games is a topic of great interest. Though some have transitioned completely to digital ownership, numerous gamers continue to favor owning the actual discs or cartridges. With publishers seeking cost savings, some companies are entirely abandoning physical releases. However, Capcom does not seem inclined to follow this trend. During their recent shareholders meeting, Capcom was asked about their intentions regarding physical sales. At present, it appears that the desire for physical games is still too strong to be overlooked.
The company acknowledged that many customers prefer having physical games, so they don’t plan on discontinuing these products at this time.
Last month, when Capcom announced the release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, many fans were elated to learn that a physical version would be available. However, not every Capcom game will receive this treatment – take Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, which came out digitally this month. Based on these developments, it seems Capcom may decide on physical releases on a situation-by-situation basis. This is excellent news for avid game collectors.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed Capcom’s recent reassurance that they will continue producing physical games. This announcement comes hot on the heels of Nintendo making similar promises during their financial briefing. While digital downloads offer convenience, us gamers can’t help but feel uneasy about the future. We’ve seen numerous digital storefronts shut down over the past few years, leading to lost media as many all-digital games become harder to obtain. Fortunately, as long as publishers like Capcom keep supporting physical media, there’s a chance for us to acquire these titles through secondhand markets. In a decade, I believe we’ll still be able to find and play Capcom classics such as “Street Fighter 6” and “Resident Evil 4.” However, tracking down digital-only releases like “Kunitsu-Gami” might prove to be a more challenging task.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but appreciate Capcom’s commitment to keeping physical games alive in this digital age. With so many collectors of vintage games out there, it makes perfect sense for Capcom to continue supporting the production and distribution of their classic titles. Who knows if we’ll still be raving about modern Capcom games decades from now? But by offering both physical and digital versions, Capcom is ensuring that a whole new generation of gamers gets the chance to discover their rich history.
