As a long-time fan of the Marvel vs. Capcom series, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that Capcom was releasing a fighting collection featuring classic games from the franchise. It’s been way too long since we last had a new entry, and I’ve missed the thrill of pitting Marvel heroes against Capcom characters in epic battles.
Last month at Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that Capcom is releasing a compilation called “Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics“. This announcement sparked great enthusiasm among Marvel fans, who have been eagerly waiting for a new entry in the series after a long hiatus of nearly 7 years. While some fans are simply thrilled to relive their memories with these classic games, others speculate that this could be a precursor to an entirely new game. In an interview with Dextero, the producer of “Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection“, Shuhei Matsumoto, expressed optimistic ambitions for the future. The hope is that this collection will attract a new fanbase and potentially pave the way for fresh developments in the series.
Matsumoto expressed to Dexterto that Capcom’s development team harbors ambitious plans. The possibility of creating a new Marvel vs Capcom or Capcom-SNK game exists, but is uncertain. If such projects materialize, they would require substantial investment of time and resources. In the meantime, the team intends to reintroduce their classic legacy games to a newer generation who may not have had the chance to experience them before, as some of these titles are no longer available on contemporary platforms.
Matsumoto pointed out that there could be potential for creating larger Marvel vs. Capcom games down the line. However, it seems that such developments are not imminent. Nevertheless, recent events bring renewed hope for the future of this series, which had been uncertain following the underperformance and fan dissatisfaction with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
As an avid fan, I can’t help but imagine the excitement if Capcom were to introduce a new Marvel vs. Capcom game. With so many fresh faces in the Marvel Universe, it would be a wise move to include newer icons like Spider-Gwen and Ms. Marvel in the roster. It’s hard to fathom Miles Morales being left out of such an event. Moreover, Capcom has some exciting new characters under its belt. For instance, Soh, the captivating protagonist from Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, would undoubtedly make for a formidable and intriguing addition to the game.
It’s uncertain if a new Marvel versus Capcom game will emerge, but Capcom is definitely putting effort into reviving some of its classic fighting titles. Not only have they released the “Marvel vs. Capcom: Fighting Collection” anthology, but they’ve also unexpectedly launched “SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos” on Steam, with plans for PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions as well. Here’s hoping this trend continues!
