As a seasoned Monster Hunter veteran, with countless hours spent tracking, hunting, and slaying colossal beasts across various iterations of this beloved franchise, I must say that Capcom has managed to pique my interest once again with their latest offerings for Monster Hunter Wilds.

The forthcoming Monster Hunter Wilds, following in the footsteps of Monster Hunter World as the top-selling Capcom game ever and the next installment in the Monster Hunter series, has recently unveiled three gameplay videos on its official YouTube page.

As an enthusiastic gamer eagerly anticipating the release of this highly-awaited Xbox or PC game, I’ve come across some captivating gameplay videos that offer a sneak peek into its fundamental mechanics, the innovative Focus Mode mechanic, and one of the weapon types I’ll be wielding – the mighty Great Sword!

To start, we have a trailer showcasing the fundamental aspects of Monster Hunter Wilds. Much like other games in the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Wilds is an action-oriented hunting game that revolves around exploring expansive, interconnected landscapes, gathering resources to create potions and battle equipment, and pursuing colossal beasts for defeat.

The trailer indicates that many fundamental mechanisms from the Monster Hunter series will remain in Monster Hunter Wilds, and it’s set to incorporate enhancements similar to those found in Monster Hunter World, including moving while consuming healing potions and employing the slinger tool for firing specialized projectiles like Flash bombs.

Furthermore, the trailer provides a detailed glimpse into Seikret, a Bird Wyvern creature that players can utilize for faster travel across the game map and task completion. Notably, it also reveals that players will have the ability to hone their weapons, consume potions, and even switch between secondary weapon types all while mounted on Seikret.

In the latest sneak peek of Monster Hunter Wilds, the spotlight is on a fresh feature called Focus Mode. This mechanism enhances gameplay by offering an aiming reticle for all weapon types, enabling players to precisely target and control their attacks and defensive blocks based on where the camera or aiming marker is pointing.

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I find Focus Mode to be an incredibly useful feature that enhances my gaming experience significantly. In many games, especially those with action-packed combat, having the ability to adjust my camera angle and redirect attacks mid-battle can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

As a tech-loving gamer, I was thrilled to see the Focus Mode trailer unveil an exciting new feature – the ability to inflict wounds on monsters. By consistently attacking strategic parts of a monster’s physique, you’ll cause injuries that will, in turn, make them more vulnerable. If you manage to strike these wounded areas, the enemy will sustain even greater damage. The Focus Mode comes into play here because when activated, it highlights these injuries on the monster’s body, making them easier for me, as a player, to spot and target effectively.

In this scenario, the combination between the Focus Mode and its powerful technique, Focus Strikes, is even more evident when the Focus Mode trailer demonstrates the Focus Mode’s most lethal move – Focus Strikes. These unique attacks are exclusive to each weapon type and can only be executed in Focus Mode. Their purpose is to maximize damage on a monster by targeting its vulnerable spots, making you appear impressive while using them.

Today, Capcom unveiled a trailer spotlighting one of Monster Hunter Rise’s 14 weapon types – the mighty Great Sword. This colossal, weighty weapon is ideal for strategic hit-and-run tactics, allowing you to build up power for massive, slow-but-devastating strikes that sweep through anything in their wake.

Furthermore, Great Swords have the ability to defend against attacks much like a shield does, and they can absorb the force of incoming attacks through the use of the Shoulder Tackle maneuver, allowing for smooth transition into subsequent attack combos without interruption.

As suggested in the trailer, the handling of the Great Sword in Monster Hunter Rise (Wilds) is similar to how it operated in Monster Hunter World. However, a fresh feature has been added: a powerful counterattack. In this move, the player executes a grand overhead strike. If this strike connects, it pushes back enemy monsters, creating an opportunity for the player to pursue with a swift running attack, striking them twice more, thereby intensifying their offensive strategy.

With the mighty sword deeply embedded, the player drags it along the monster’s flesh, tearing its skin apart and leaving gruesome shreds in its wake.

As an analyst, I’ve noticed an intriguing addition to the mechanics of the Great Sword. When a player times a block perfectly against a certain attack, both the player and the monster become entangled in a grappling contest. It remains unclear whether this grappling mechanic is exclusive to the Great Sword or if other weapon types can also execute it.

Monster Hunter Wilds will have players adopting new awesome techniques to hunt monsters

As the public playable demo for Monster Hunter Wilds approaches during Gamescom 2024, it appears that Capcom is stoking anticipation by releasing new trailers. I have reason to believe we’ll be treated to additional gameplay trailers showcasing the remaining 14 weapon types in the weeks leading up to the event. Additionally, a spectacular cinematic trailer featuring never-before-seen monsters to hunt could be unveiled at Gamescom itself.

As an ardent enthusiast of the Monster Hunter series, it’s exhilarating to anticipate that Monster Hunter Rise seems to emulate the gameplay of Monster Hunter World, one of my all-time favorite Xbox and PC games, while maintaining its uniqueness through novel mechanics and a vast array of new creatures to conquer.

2025 can’t come soon enough as I eagerly anticipate the chance to experiment with the fresh mechanics and strategies that Monster Hunter Wilds will bring when it launches on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
