As a long-time fan who vividly remembers the thrill of those arcade corners filled with Capcom’s fighting games, this news is nothing short of exhilarating! I can still hear the echoes of “Hadouken!” and “Shun Goku Satsu” from my youth, and seeing these classics make a comeback on modern platforms feels like a dream come true.
In terms of fighting games, no other publisher can boast a history as impressive as Capcom’s. With an extensive collection of series like Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and others under its belt, it’s no surprise that Capcom is a force to be reckoned with in this genre. However, finding some of the company’s older fighting games can be quite challenging. However, it seems that situation might soon improve. In a recent interview with IGN, the producer of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, Shuhei Matsumoto, hinted that Capcom intends to port its classic fighting games onto contemporary platforms. This is exciting news for both dedicated fans who have been waiting for a chance to revisit these games, and new players who missed out on them when they initially came out.
“Matsumoto stated that our goal is to bring our classic fighting games onto modern consoles, allowing us to reach a wider audience who might not have had the chance to play these games in the past. By always looking ahead, we aim to ensure that these games are easily accessible to everyone.”
It might take some time until all of Capcom’s classic fighting games become available on contemporary platforms, but they appear to be making progress in this area. By the end of 2024, a compilation called Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is set to hit PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. This collection includes six classic fighting games (and one arcade brawler). Moreover, last month saw the unexpected launch of SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos on Nintendo Switch and PS4, but it’s important to mention that this game was published by SNK, not Capcom.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection appears to lack the popular game, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which is currently available on PS4 and Xbox One but not Switch. This is one title that Switch owners would likely appreciate being re-released! On a personal note, I’d love to see the comeback of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars, an excellent fighting game released in 2008 on Wii and arcades. This game combined beloved Capcom characters with favorites from Tatsunoko Production. Naturally, many other Capcom enthusiasts probably have their own suggestions, and it’ll be exciting to see what games might return due to this initiative!
