In less than a month, the upcoming film “Captain America: Brave New World” is encountering negative feedback due to predictions of subpar earnings during its debut weekend at the box office.
According to Shawn Robbins’ predictions at Box Office Theory, the upcoming movie could make anywhere from $81 million to $107 million during its debut weekend in the U.S., with an expected total of around $96 million. However, some media sources are celebrating this figure as a success, but a more accurate comparison to previous Marvel hits indicates a possible downturn for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In other words, despite this projected earnings, it seems that the MCU may be experiencing a significant drop in popularity compared to its past achievements.
Certain news sources have swiftly portrayed these figures as favorable by emphasizing the $96 million debut for a February launch, which on its own may appear satisfactory. However, upon closer examination, this film’s premiere is over a five-day weekend that encompasses both Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. When compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s past successes, Disney’s once powerful franchise appears to be showing significant signs of decline.
In the year 2023, the movie titled “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” debuted with an opening weekend gross of $106.1 million. At first glance, this figure appeared promising, particularly when compared to the earnings of the preceding Ant-Man films. However, the film’s box office performance took a significant downturn in its second week, setting a record for a historic drop. As a result, it underperformed domestically, earning a total of $214 million.
In a comparison between Captain America and Ant Man, it’s clear that they operate on different levels within Marvel’s universe. Captain America is one of the mainstay superheroes, while Ant Man typically occupies a secondary role. Marvel’s post-Endgame strategy revolves around what they call a “mantle,” which involves passing the mantles or roles of established heroes to a new, more diverse group without significantly disrupting box office success.
It’s become evident through instances like Sam Wilson assuming the role of Captain America, Kate Bishop stepping into the role of Hawkeye, and Riri Williams becoming Iron Heart – and so on. However, the response from the audience is consistent: passing on the title or mantle doesn’t seem to be a successful approach.
According to Robbins’ prediction, the movie might only earn between $195 million and $280 million in total domestic sales, which is significantly lower than what its prequels achieved.
Compared to earlier Captain America movies with Chris Evans, the difference is particularly notable when we consider the box office performance of Captain America: Civil War (2016). In this film, Chris Evans played the lead role and it opened with a whopping $179.1 million, eventually earning $408 million domestically. On the other hand, the predicted opening weekend earnings for Brave New World are projected to be $96 million, which would translate to a significant 46% decrease in first-weekend box office revenue and an estimated 41% drop in total domestic gross—all before taking inflation into account.
In 2014, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” started with a whopping $95 million and eventually grossed $259.7 million within the U.S. When accounting for inflation, these initial earnings rise to approximately $126.6 million during its opening weekend, while the total domestic earnings swell to an impressive $356 million—figures that far surpass expectations set for “Brave New World.
In contrast to when Winter Soldier debuted, with an average movie ticket price of $8.14, today it costs $10.78. This implies that if Brave New World manages to match the domestic box office success of Winter Soldier ($259.7 million), a substantial number of viewers would have missed out on the movie, highlighting a noticeable drop in audience engagement over the past eleven years.
Moreover, the financial risks associated with Brave New World are significantly greater. For instance, Winter Soldier was produced with an estimated budget of $170 million, while Civil War, starring Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and many Avengers, had a budget of $250 million.
The estimated budget for “Brave New World” is said to be around $350-$375 million, with the additional costs of extensive reshoots causing some to predict that production costs prior to marketing could reach nearly half a billion dollars. Since marketing expenses commonly double the initial investment, the film would need an enormous global box office success just to recoup its costs. In contrast, “Winter Soldier” was a more cost-effective production that managed to achieve blockbuster status without the hefty financial burdens that “Brave New World” appears to bear.
Amidst stories about a disorganized filming process, there have been quiet indications of the movie’s release. This year saw numerous script revisions and additional scenes being shot, supposedly to incorporate Giancarlo Esposito’s character, Sidewinder, who is said to be the head of the Serpent Society villain group. These production troubles not only slowed down the film but also stirred doubts about the unity of the finished product.

Actor Seth Rollins, who ultimately didn’t appear in the final cut of the movie due to reshoots, spoke about the disorganized production process when he talked with YouTube personality Chris Van Vliet.
I’m not featured in the movie. I don’t want anyone assuming they’re there to watch me, specifically Seth Rollins. There might be a couple of people who would do that, but I don’t want them to unnecessarily spend their time. I aim to provide accurate information and avoid misleading anyone.
Furthermore, it’s important to note that Brave New World has faced criticism from some parts of its audience. This criticism stems from the perception that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is focusing too heavily on political commentary and decisions driven by diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), at the expense of compelling storytelling.
In this film, Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson, who assumes the role of Captain America, hasn’t had the same impact on viewers as Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers did previously. Critics have noted that shows like “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” might have driven some fans away due to the strong emphasis on identity politics, with certain viewers claiming that these themes overshadowed character growth.
From my perspective, while $96 million may appear substantial to some onlookers, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe when considering the monumental box office successes that Marvel has previously achieved. The glory days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), characterized by blockbuster openings and widespread cultural resonance, seem to be slipping further away.
Given the mounting criticism Disney is facing concerning its management of its flagship franchise, Captain America: Brave New World could potentially join the ranks of Marvel’s ongoing efforts to rekindle the box office magic that once defined its films.
