Captain America: Brave New World CinemaScore Marks New Low for MCU

Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson has soared onto movie screens in the new Marvel Studios production, Captain America: Brave New World. Yet, this film seems to have fallen short of its intended impact. Being part of the expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, it connects with multiple earlier films within the franchise, acting as a sequel not just for the Captain America series but also for The Incredible Hulk, Eternals, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV show. The movie handles several narratives simultaneously, which might be a reason it hasn’t received warm receptions from both fans and critics.

Indeed, Brave New World holds an exceptional “distinction” as the lowest-rated film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), earning a B- grade from CinemaScore. Though this mark might be enviable for someone who received it on a challenging high school exam, it’s far from satisfactory for a superhero genre movie and downright troubling for a fresh entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s not a hidden fact that Marvel Studios has experienced some creative dips following Avengers: Endgame. Although not every production since then has been universally panned, there seems to be a decrease in the consistency of quality over the past few years. Films such as Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels received a B rating on CinemaScore, marking their lowest scores within the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, films like Thor, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder managed to score a B+ rating.

Critics often find it harder to evaluate comic book films due to their less intimate understanding of the vast history and characters portrayed on screen. Consequently, they might not fully appreciate the intricate details or “geeky” aspects that these movies typically offer. However, since a considerable number of viewers have some background knowledge about the original comics, they are more likely to enjoy a superhero movie that remains true to its comic book origins, even if it falls short of being high-brow cinema.

Despite the enthusiasm for Marvel Studios productions, a subdued reaction to Brave New World suggests that fans are not blindly accepting every release. Even the most ardent Marvel film enthusiast can be deterred by a complex plot and ambiguous character motivations.

In a somewhat improved opening weekend performance, Brave New World suggests that it may not be entirely due to superhero fatigue that the movie missed its mark with audiences. However, ongoing rumors about numerous reshoots, a delayed release date, and the film’s lack of advancing the main multiverse storyline suggest that Marvel Studios should consider making adjustments promptly.

The previous year’s mashup of Deadpool and Wolverine was a massive crowd-pleaser, and it looks like there’s a lot of buzz for the upcoming movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Here’s hoping this means the studio still has some creative firepower up their sleeves.

Do you think Captain America: Brave New World‘s CinemaScore is deserved?
