Captain America: Brave New World Defies Expectations at the Box Office!

Brave New World” has surpassed two other Marvel Studios films in global box office earnings, meaning it won’t be the lowest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which now includes 35 movies. Released on Valentine’s/Presidents Day weekend (Feb. 14), it earned $100 million in four days and became Marvel’s 35th consecutive number one at the domestic box office. However, its earnings dropped by 68% in its second weekend, making it the third poorest performance for the MCU, behind “The Marvels” (78%) and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (69%).

Following a ten-day run, “Captain America: Brave New World” has soared to $141 million domestically and $148 million internationally, totaling approximately $289 million globally. This figure surpasses the $265 million worldwide earnings of 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” making it the lowest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film until the “Captain Marvel” sequel, “The Marvels,” which concluded its theater run in 2023 with $199.7 million.

In addition, Harrison Ford takes on the roles of U.S. President Ross/Red Hulk (filling in for the late William Hurt), Liv Tyler portrays Betty Ross, and Tim Blake Nelson steps into the character of Samuel Sterns/the Leader (last seen in the 2008 reboot of Hulk). Notably, Brave New World can be considered a follow-up to the second Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which did not enjoy significant box office success.

Marvel’s film featuring Edward Norton, a sequel to their summer hit “Iron Man,” had the smallest domestic debut for any Marvel Studios movie when it opened with $55 million. This record lasted for 15 years until “The Marvels” underperformed, earning just $46 million at its launch in November 2023. This was a significant drop compared to “Quantumania,” which had made an impressive start of $106 million in February the same year. The third Ant-Man film ended up making a relatively modest $463 million worldwide, which was the lowest earnings for the trilogy.

Without any major blockbuster movies scheduled until Disney’s live-action Snow White on March 21, Brave New World faces a tough challenge to surpass the box office earnings of 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, which grossed $370 million. This was during the summer before The Avengers became the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie to hit the $1 billion mark. First Avenger, featuring Chris Evans as the scrawny soldier-turned-super soldier Steve Rogers, is currently the fourth lowest-grossing film in the long-running franchise, lagging behind the pandemic-era release of Black Widow ($379 million).

The film “Brave New World” is unique among the first three Marvel Studios movies on Rotten Tomatoes to receive a low rating, with 49%. This is slightly better than “Eternals” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania“, which scored 47% and 46% respectively. Interestingly, it’s also the only one from the entire franchise to get a B- grade from CinemaScore, the lowest rating in the series. However, verified audiences were more positive, giving it an 80% fresh rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, which is lower than the average for the MCU but still better than films like “The Incredible Hulk” (69%) and “Captain Marvel” (45%).

Featuring Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford, the movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World” is currently showing exclusively in cinemas.
