Captain America: Brave New World: Who Is Red Hulk?

As a long-time gamer and comic book fan, I was absolutely thrilled to see the first appearance of the Red Hulk in the new trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World.” The Red Hulk’s origin story is one that has always intrigued me – Thunderbolt Ross, a respected general who became obsessed with capturing the Incredible Hulk and eventually transformed into this powerful red beast.

The biggest — literally and figuratively — reveal in the new trailer for Captain America: Brave New World was the first appearance of the Red Hulk. On the one hand, the Red Hulk is exactly what it sounds like — The Incredible Hulk, but red — but on the other, there’s quite a bit of backstory to get us there. First appearing in 2008’s Hulk #1, the character was created by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. Well, kinda. In reality, the mysterious Red Hulk’s alter ego was Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, a celebrated general who had become increasingly unhinged due to his obsession with capturing the Incredible Hulk.

For over two years in “Hulk” comic books, I followed Thunderbolt Ross’s appearances alongside Bruce Banner and other characters as they attempted to unravel the enigma of the new Red Hulk. It wasn’t until issue #23 that the shocking revelation unfolded: the Ross we had interacted with was a Life Model Decoy, and the genuine article was none other than the Red Hulk himself.

As The Hulk grows stronger and bigger from his anger, the Red Hulk’s outward appearance remains fairly consistent. However, internally, he generates more heat with each growing rage, posing a threat to those nearby due to the intense heat and potential flames he emits. His ability to absorb energy attacks grants him immunity to many similar assaults, making direct confrontations with highly powerful adversaries the most effective approach for defeating him.

Just like the Incredible Hulk’s alter ego, Bruce Banner, Red Hulk boasts extraordinary strength, endurance, and resilience. Moreover, he possesses an impressive ability to heal rapidly from wounds in a short time frame.

In “Captain America: Brave New World,” Harrison Ford takes on the role of Thunderbolt Ross, a part previously brought to life by the late William Hurt. In this film adaptation, Ross holds the position of U.S. President. A sneak peek in the trailer reveals the presence of a Red Hulk, although no transformation or clear shot of his face is shown. The Red Hulk sports an attire that seems like dress pants and exhibits gray/salt and pepper hair. It’s plausible that some elements of Ross’ backstory will be revised, but it’s safe to assume his General (now President) Ross persona will stay the same.

In the upcoming movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” several new faces will join the cast. Danny Ramirez portrays Joaquin Torres, also known as Falcon; Carl Lumbly is Isaiah Bradley; Tim Blake Nelson takes on the role of Samuel Sterns, or The Leader; Harrison Ford plays General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross; Liv Tyler depicts Betty Ross; and Shira Haas portrays Sabra. Additionally, Xosha Roquemory, Rosa Salazar, and Giancarlo Esposito have been added to the project, with Esposito’s role being recently updated during reshoots. “Captain America: Brave New World” is directed by Julius Onah and written by Malcolm Spellman (from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton.

The upcoming movie, “Captain America: Brave New World,” is set to make its debut only in cinemas starting from February 14, 2025.
