Have you heard that there’s a sinister version of Captain America roaming the Marvel Universe? If not, don’t fret because he’s causing quite a stir when he encounters Iron Man and the West Coast Avengers. The Captain America we’re talking about is actually Flag-Smasher, the Hydra Cap who attempted to rule the world during “Secret Empire”. He’s made occasional appearances since then, with his latest being in “Uncanny Avengers”. The return of Flag-Smasher coincides with a challenging period for the West Coast Avengers, as they grapple with internal issues of their own.
Exclusive sneak peek into issue #5 of West Coast Avengers, penned by Gerry Duggan, Danny Kim, Arthur Hesli, and lettered by VC’s Joe Caramagna. The storyline starts at the Cathedral of the Singularity, a church constructed by one version of the Avengers foe, Ultron. However, it should be noted that this is only one manifestation of Ultron, as the villain has recently fragmented. Interestingly, the antagonist has chosen to align itself with the West Coast Avengers, while also recruiting a reformed former villain, Blue Bolt, into their ranks – a key aspect of their mission statement.
The opening scene of West Coast Avengers issue 5 finds War Machine monitoring Ultron and his fanatical following, when suddenly he receives a call from Ultron and Storm – two individuals representing the Avengers. They inquire about the status of Ultron, as Iron Man has declined to openly discuss the matter with them. Tony Stark then enters the conversation to inform War Machine that he’s found a lead on Flag-Smasher, promptly ending the call.
Flag-Smasher makes his appearance here, aiming to attack a Department of Defense nuclear convoy. Instead of using stealthy methods, he rams the convoy in broad daylight, smashing through the windshield of one of the trucks. The villainous version of Captain America tries to veer the truck off course and open the rear doors, but a sudden gust of wind catches his attention, ending our sneak peek.
Could it be that if Ultron were to change his ways, there might be a chance for Flag-Smasher to undergo a transformation as well? While such an idea is appealing, considering Marvel’s narrative history, we can probably expect this change in character alignment won’t occur with Flag-Smasher. Given the effort put into rebranding Hydra Cap and assigning him the Flag-Smasher title, it seems more likely that he will continue to embody his villainous persona.
In the solicitation for West Coast Avengers #5, it’s stated that “Flag-Smasher Returns!” Steve Rogers’ sinister counterpart is back on the West Coast and seeking revenge. The question remains whether Iron Man and War Machine’s makeshift team can withstand a foe who almost ruled the globe.
