As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt and a keen interest in both technology and quirky pop culture events, I find myself intrigued by the legal spat between Cards Against Humanity and Elon Musk. Having followed the company’s antics since their “Cards Against Humanity Saves America” campaign back in 2017, it is fascinating to see this long-standing feud unfold.
This week, the creators of the popular card game Cards Against Humanity filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk for $15 million due to a disagreement over a piece of land on the U.S.-Mexico border. The dispute stems from Cards Against Humanity’s purchase of the property to preserve a pristine section from former President Trump’s proposed wall construction. The company claims that Musk, who owns X (formerly Twitter), Tesla, and SpaceX, has been placing construction materials on their land, leading them to take legal action.
The legal action brought forth by Cards Against Humanity became public knowledge on September 20th. To fully grasp its context, though, you should know about their 2017 campaign, “Cards Against Humanity Saves America,” which was the origin of this lawsuit. During this initiative, over 150,000 players contributed $15 each to fund various pranks and projects. One such project included purchasing land on the U.S.-Mexico border with the intention of making it difficult and costly for Trump to construct his proposed wall, as the goal was to make the process as time-consuming and expensive as possible.
From the time SpaceX purchased that piece of land until now, Cards Against Humanity claims Elon Musk has been discarding SpaceX materials on their property. The image below, they assert, was taken in 2024. Upon being made aware of this issue, SpaceX reportedly attempted a lowball offer for the land, leading to Cards Against Humanity’s retort: “Go take a hike, Elon Musk. We’ll meet you in court.
Currently, Cards Against Humanity has taken legal action against Elon Musk, and true to form, they’re making their intentions clear without mincing words. The lawsuit was announced, surprisingly enough, on [X], and the company is mobilizing its community once more in this fight. A website called “elonowesyou100dollars.com” has been established, providing information and a statement for those who backed Cards Against Humanity’s campaign in 2017. The company encourages people to share the statement on [X] to intensify the pressure on Elon Musk, and they’ve also prepared a separate statement for individuals who didn’t contribute the $15 seven years ago.
If Cards Against Humanity triumphs in their legal battle with Musk, they’ve promised to reward each of their 150,000 loyal subscribers with a cool hundred dollars – that’s why the site goes by its name!
Although what we’re offering doesn’t fully make up for the distress our subscribers have experienced watching Elon Musk desecrate their former lush landscapes, which were once home to wild horses roaming under the Texas moonlight, we believe this is a promising initial step.
As a devoted admirer, I haven’t seen Elon Musk respond specifically to the contested land claims or engage with the broader legal dispute initiated by Cards Against Humanity thus far.
