As a seasoned movie buff with decades of film watching under my belt, I must say that the latest addition to Netflix’s festive offerings, “Carry-On,” has left me utterly spellbound. Having watched my fair share of action thrillers and sequels, this one truly stands out as a unique blend of suspense, humor, and holiday cheer.
This year, Netflix has rolled out a series of its own holiday productions, along with that, they’ve introduced an action-thriller Christmas movie titled “Carry-On”. Since it debuted on December 13, the film has been receiving rave reviews and is expected to be one of the most-watched movies on the platform. Not only that, but it has also recorded the biggest opening for a Netflix film this year! With all the excitement surrounding the movie, fans are already speculating about a potential sequel. The film’s lead actor, Taron Egerton, who plays Ethan in “Carry-On”, has expressed his interest in reprising his role if a sequel is ever greenlit. However, beware of spoilers for those who haven’t seen the movie yet!
During an interview with Today, Egerton expressed that a sequel could spark “a very intriguing discussion,” if it’s what the audience desires. He is open to the idea, but emphasized that the storyline would need to be compelling as well. He mentioned that while the original movie had a complete and satisfying plot, it might require an exceptionally innovative concept for a sequel to feel worthy. He added, “Why not?” referencing how films like Die Hard have spawned multiple sequels and developed into a franchise. Moreover, Carry-On seems to take inspiration from the Bruce Willis movies.
In the wrap-up of “Carry-On”, Ethan, skillfully played by Ethan, prevents the sinister traveler (Jason Bateman) from executing his plan. Despite being a TSA agent at the time, Ethan’s actions don’t go unnoticed. LAPD officer Elena Cole (Danielle Deadwyler), intrigued by his impressive display, suggests he might want to join her team. This ending seems to pave the way for a potential sequel.
The film titled “Carry-On” garnered an impressive 88% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and is lauded as a thrilling rollercoaster ride that keeps the tension high throughout. Although no sequel has been officially announced, it’s worth mentioning that the director, Jaume Collet-Serra, has a history of directing action-thriller films that didn’t receive sequels, including several movies starring Liam Neeson such as “Unknown,” “Non-Stop,” and “Run All Night.” Interestingly, Collet-Serra also directed the original “Orphan” movie, which later evolved into a franchise with various directors at its helm.
The fact is, Netflix has always leaned toward sequels for its productions, especially when they perform well (and sometimes before they’re even released). Since Carry-On has already become a standout success in 2024, it’s likely that some ideas could possibly be tossed around. A follow-up would be a great chance to see how Ethan would handle a new mission – this time as a father with a newborn, navigating his newfound experience in dealing with high-pressure situations. Could Carry-On be the new Die Hard? It wouldn’t be a bad idea, and it could give Netflix their own action franchise.
Carry-On is now streaming on Netflix.
