Cartoon Network Icons Celebrate the Impact of Hazbin Hotel!

The animated series “Hazbin Hotel” has catapulted itself into one of the largest original shows on Amazon Prime, with Charlie Morningstar and other inhabitants of the Hellaverse being part of a global phenomenon. As fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of the second season on the streaming platform, Vivienne Medrano’s creation continues to generate buzz not only among fans but also within the animation community at large. This year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival saw several renowned figures from Cartoon Network extolling Medrano’s universe and citing the series as a model for aspiring creators in the medium today.

During a recent gathering at Annecy (a popular animation festival), some well-known animators such as Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky, Rebecca Sugar, Pendleton Ward, and J.G. Qunitel were present. Notably, they’ve each created successful animated series like The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Regular Show . At the event, McCracken emphasized the importance of animators sharing their work on platforms like YouTube and social media to attract attention. He cited an example of an independent animated show called Hazbin Hotel, suggesting that creators should try the independent route first to gain visibility, build an audience, and then potentially secure deals with channels or streaming services. Additionally, these creators also commended other independent productions such as Scavengers Reign and Common Side Effects.

A Samurai Speaks

Genndy Tartakovsky, known for creating shows like Samurai Jack, Primal, Unicorn: Eternal Warriors, and the upcoming movie Fixed, expressed some thoughts about succeeding in the industry today. He said, “Nowadays, it seems that only established intellectual properties (IP) are valued. It becomes challenging for a new generation to gain recognition when studios primarily focus on recreating what’s already been done.” Although Tartakovsky didn’t reveal any sneak peeks of the third season of Primal headed to Adult Swim, his raw-animated film was shown and has thus far garnered positive responses.

Fortunately, J.G. Quintel, the creator of Regular Show, mentioned that his team is keen on recruiting fresh talents from schools and aims to cultivate a new wave of animators. In his own words, “We’re taking in people who have just graduated. They haven’t had this experience before, and they’re learning the ropes of boarding and creating premise-driven animation right here on our show.

At present, the release date for Season 2 of “Hazbin Hotel” remains unannounced, although fans are eagerly anticipating its return this year. Creator Vivienne Medrano has already confirmed that they have something significant planned for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, scheduled for later in the summer. Given that seasons three and four have already been confirmed, it seems Amazon is looking forward to a prolonged association with the Hotel of the Damned.
