Despite having experience in creating expansive open-world games, Obsidian Entertainment has shifted its design strategy in more recent projects, focusing on “open zone” or “open area” layouts. Essentially, instead of providing a single massive, continuous open world for players to explore, they offer several smaller, interconnected areas. While this style might not appeal to everyone, it enables games like Avowed to combine the freedom of exploration with a more focused, manageable environment.
Back in February 28, one of the highly acclaimed games that were launched was “Star Wars: Dark Forces” by LucasArts. This first-person shooter (FPS) game, released for DOS and Windows systems on PCs, was heavily influenced by the 1993 hit game “Doom”. For both Star Wars fans and FPS enthusiasts, it was groundbreaking as it introduced the character of Kyle Katarn, a Stormtrooper turned Jedi, and allowed players to look up, down, and jump – features not commonly seen in games at that time. Although its story is no longer considered canonical, “Dark Forces” was one of the pioneers in the Star Wars universe, delving into how the Rebels obtained the Death Star plans and introducing the Dark Trooper droids, a unit that later appeared in various games and even the popular Disney+ series “The Mandalorian”.
As a torrent of information now occupies the player’s thoughts, they are subsequently called upon to penetrate the massive fortified city of Paradis. Similar to other locations in the world of Eora within the game Avowed, Paradis boasts a deep and intriguing past; however, players must delve into its history to unravel its complete tale.
As a devoted fan, I embark on an exciting journey with Avowed, starting as an emissary of the Aedyran Emperor, dispatched to unravel the enigma behind a perplexing Dreamscourge plague ravaging the continent of Living Lands. Initially, the game presents a captivating primary adversary; however, as I delve deeper into the Living Lands and converse with various NPCs, the intricacies of my character’s former homeland, the Aedyr Empire, gradually unfold.
In true Obsidian Entertainment style, players are given the freedom to form their own opinions about the moral compass of the Aedyr Empire. Yet, there are tantalizing clues and lore hints scattered throughout the game that dedicated fans can follow to piece together a deeper understanding of this enigmatic empire.
