A week ago, I was on the second day of Gamescom 2024’s exhilarating ride—a gaming conference so vast it seemed like I might as well have walked around the Earth. More than half of that distance was dedicated to navigating the Xbox booth, its largest yet. By then, I had already tried numerous games that were starting to blur together into a single, pixelated delirium. However, with some perspective gained since returning home, seven games in particular left an indelible impression on me when I was in Cologne.

From Flipgrid to Flip to a foot in the grave. Say farewell to Microsoft’s standalone education-focused video app.

Approximately six years following the acquisition of Flipgrid (now simply called Flip), Microsoft plans to discontinue the independent app associated with its education-centric video service. Originally known as a platform allowing educators to distribute videos to students categorized by groups and subjects, Flip has been in operation, under various names, since 2012. Now, Microsoft has opted to retire the standalone app and merge its primary features into Teams for Education.
