After the restructuring of several creative teams under DC’s All-In initiative, writer Tini Howard worked on her final story arc for the character Catwoman. This stretch began with Catwoman #39 (2022) and continued through to issue #68 (2024). During this time, Howard penned the tales of Selena Kyle, who engaged in blackmail against crime bosses, rekindled past relationships, endured prison life, and ultimately executed her deadliest heists yet.
In issues #59 through #68 of Catwoman, her escapades are more akin to lethal assignments rather than typical heists, a fact that could prove fatal given her usual encounters with adrenaline and danger. Fortunately, the events of Gotham War granted her the rare ability to cheat death nine times. Despite not usually possessing superpowers in the comic books, her on-screen counterparts have exhibited abilities reminiscent of this extraordinary trait.
In Batman Returns, Catwoman Has Nine Lives
In the movie “Batman Returns”, Michelle Pfeiffer’s character, Catwoman, experiences a revival following an otherworldly interaction with some street cats. As the story unfolds, Catwoman manages to survive numerous lethal situations and comes to understand that she possesses nine lives. Towards the end of the film, she employs a few of these lives to defeat Max Shreck, the corrupt industrialist (played by Christopher Walken). Despite appearing dead at one point, Catwoman is shown to still be alive in the final scenes, hinting that she continues to exist.
In movies outside of Batman Returns and even in Catwoman (2004), the character Catwoman is portrayed as someone who seems capable of evading death through supernatural means. Similar to how Catwoman was revived after dying in Batman Returns, Halle Berry’s Patience Phillips was resurrected following her demise due to a mystical encounter with cats. Although comic book depictions typically show Catwoman as an expert thief without any supernatural abilities, other media have established that she could possess traits like the ability to be reborn multiple times, much like having nine lives.
Tini Howard’s Catwoman Has Nine Lives For Nine Deadly Heists
During Tini Howard’s run on Catwoman, most of the story unfolds within a realistic context. However, the concluding arc delves into the fantastical. Similar to Tini Howard’s Catwoman in 2004, her Catwoman is bestowed with supernatural powers due to a divine feline entity. In contrast to earlier portrayals, though, Howard’s Catwoman isn’t merely resurrected. She receives an additional nine lives, which aligns more closely with the version of Catwoman seen in Batman Returns.
Yet, unlike Pfeiffer’s Catwoman who utilizes her nine lives for vengeance against those who harmed her, Howard’s Catwoman employs them to execute her most daring heists. This involves purloining corium from a highly radioactive power plant, collaborating with the Suicide Squad, plunging into the abyssal ocean depths, confronting a cannibal, traversing the extremities of space, and numerous other perilous adventures.
For Catwoman, the risks are significant, and with each daring heist she executes using her extraordinary lives, those lives are dwindling as she faces perilous missions. This final act for Howard is a fitting farewell, pushing Catwoman into her riskiest predicaments yet.
