In a new twist for Harlan Coben’s works, the second of his novels to be translated into Spanish (following “The Innocent” in 2021), and the first to originate from South America, Netflix’s Argentinian thriller titled “Caught” demonstrates yet again that regardless of its setting, the skilled author will consistently deliver a captivating ending filled with unexpected shocks, intriguing surprises, and breathtaking plot twists.
Oh my, the climax of that six-part series was simply thrilling! From the chilling decapitation of a log truck to the heart-stopping last-minute confessions, it was a rollercoaster ride. As a fan, I couldn’t help but feel my pulse racing as vigilante journalist Ema Garay (Soledad Villamil) unveiled the shocking truth behind the murder of the 16-year-old musical prodigy. What an exhilarating ending!
Here’s a closer look at what went down.
Caught ending explained
How exactly was Marcos involved?

Episode 5 concluded with Marcos (Juan Minujín) striking Ema across the head with a rowing oar, a dramatic moment set against the breathtaking Patagonian mountain range. This action was triggered by Ema’s discovery that Marcos had indeed been embezzling from his previous company in Buenos Aires, a revelation that led to his dismissal. With his financial situation dire, Marcos devised a plan to gain control over the family land currently owned by the Fronteras Foundation, a children’s charity. His method? Accuse its founder, also his childhood friend, of online solicitation and sexual misconduct.
In the gripping opening sequence of episode 6, I found myself transported back in time as Marcos attempts to persuade Leo (Alberto Ammann) that disposing of the land is advantageous for him. However, when this tactic fails, he resorts to a more personal approach, reminding him of their past indiscretion – the break-in at the Briguel family home as youths, an incident that left a housekeeper traumatized for life. Yet, Leo remains steadfast, asserting, “This property isn’t truly mine. It belongs to the children.
Subsequently, we’re shown a memory sequence involving Marcos and Martina (Carmela Rivero), the cellist whose body was discovered in the woods. Their initial encounter took place on a private jet hired by Fran Briguel (Mike Amigorena), a questionable businessman. He had booked Martina for an exclusive performance of her provocative music, but without her permission, he became too physically aggressive. Marcos, seeking financial backing from Fran, was tasked with preventing an upset Martina from causing a scene.
Following her decision not to involve the police regarding Fran, Marcos develops a rapport with Martina. Upon returning home, they manage to keep in contact. While the nature of their relationship isn’t explicitly physical, it is apparent that Martina holds Marcos in the highest trust. As a result, she willingly consents to lead Leo to a secret meeting under the pretense it’s for a beneficial intervention at midnight. However, whether or not their relationship transcends friendship remains unclear.
Without Leo realizing it, Marcos had orchestrated a covert operation to trap his BFF: when Leo showed up, he was suddenly confronted by Ema and her team, who mistakenly believed they’d apprehended the person pretending to be a child online (and possibly abusing) underage girls.
Did Ema survive?

In the present scenario, Marcos finds himself hauling an unconscious Ema towards the water. However, fortune favors her as she regains consciousness in the nick of time to defend herself. As death lurked, she managed to strike her assailant on the head with a rock. Following their struggle, the reporter promptly shares a video about Marcos’s actions on social media platforms, exposing all the relevant details.
Recognizing that a secret has been exposed, Marcos phones his spouse, urging her not to accept at first glance whatever she’s moments away from hearing. With his safety belt undone and his foot pressed hard on the gas pedal, he intentionally collides with an oncoming logging truck.
So, who killed Martina?

While Marcos used Martina for his business intentions, it’s important to note that he didn’t cause her death outright. Similarly, as Ema comes to understand from examining pictures of the night she vanished, Leo wasn’t responsible for her demise either.
Upon noticing certain wall drawings in a specific photograph, the journalist makes his way to the residence of Juliana, Leo’s former partner (Victoria Almeida). It is later disclosed that Armando, Juliana’s teenage son, was the mysterious figure seen departing the party with Martina on a yacht. Following their night together, Martina realized she had been manipulated as a piece in Marcos’ game. When Armando, who essentially grew up under Leo’s care, learns about Martina’s involvement, a heated argument breaks out, resulting in Martina being accidentally pushed down the stairs and fatally injured.
Upon arriving home, Juliana discovers Armando holding a lifeless Martina. Her immediate instinct is to safeguard them both, leading her to assist her son in concealing the body in the forest and secretly placing her phone among her ex’s belongings at his old campsite. As she prays for Leo’s intervention once more, Juliana admits to having betrayed her ex by selling him out. She also implores Ema not to involve the authorities, but ultimately agrees to confess everything at the police station and accept whatever penalties come their way.
Is Leo really dead?

It was understandable that Leo appeared to have perished after being fired upon by Facu (Alián Devetac) – the father of the girl he’d been falsely accused of assaulting – and subsequently falling from a cliff. However, the absence of his body finding its way ashore raises some uncertainty in Ema’s thoughts.
During a prison visit, Ema discovers that Facu’s accusation has been reduced to attempted murder. The story becomes more complex when the inmate shares with her, “I recognize Leo. That man can forgive anything. If he’s still alive, he’ll return. But if he isn’t, both of us will have to deal with that fact.
At the end, it’s disclosed that Leo managed to live through the fall somehow miraculously. Later, given the circumstances of his best friend falsely accusing him of child abuse, his lover exposing him unfairly online, and his ex-partner setting him up for murder, it’s no wonder he chose not to go back to the town where these events occurred.
Instead, accompanied by five other wanderers, he now spends his days traversing the Argentine countryside on horseback. Is anyone surprised?
