Just as all good stories eventually reach their conclusion, so too does the captivating Star Wars saga, and this is particularly true for ‘Star Wars: The High Republic‘. This exciting expansion introduced a new chapter in the galaxy far, far away, taking place centuries before the Skywalker Saga during the peak of the Jedi Order. Marvel has delved into ‘The High Republic’ across three distinct phases, with Phase III nearing its end in ‘Star Wars: The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi’. Renowned author Cavan Scott, who played a significant role in previous ‘High Republic’ projects, is back to write ‘Fear of the Jedi’ and bring the tale of Jedi Master Keeve Trennis to its end.
In this discussion, ComicBook had a chat with author Cavan Scott about the novel “Star Wars: The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi” and wrapping up Phase III of “The High Republic”. Here, we catch up to hear Scott’s key points regarding Phase III, the significance behind the title “Fear of the Jedi”, the emergence of Wookiee Jedi Master Kelnacca from “The Acolyte”, and concluding the storyline for Keeve Trennis. Furthermore, we are thrilled to share an exclusive sneak peek at the interior pages for “Star Wars: The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi” #1, beautifully illustrated by artist Marika Cresta (known for her work on “Doctor Aphra”).
Interviewer: You’ve been part of The High Republic narrative for a while now, and it’s time for you to conclude Phase III with “Fear of the Jedi”. What aspects of this phase in Star Wars storytelling have you found most enjoyable?
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed assembling all these pieces, including Tey Sirrek’s character from Phase II who has had quite an eventful life since then. It’s been delightful to witness my fellow creators for the High Republic project excel in their individual stories, unfolding events we began plotting seven years ago! The journey of The High Republic has significantly impacted me since our initial brainstorming session at Skywalker Ranch and it’s been an unforgettable experience. Now, we’re finally reaching the final stages!
Is there a hidden message in the title “Fear of the Jedi,” given that Jedi are taught to conquer fear to avoid succumbing to the dark side of the Force? Could you explain its significance and whether it hints at ominous events to come?
Toward the end of our first week brainstorming what would eventually be known as The High Republic in 2018, I posed a query: ‘What causes fear within the Jedi?’ This question became pivotal for the entire project, and throughout this series, I endeavor to address it, zeroing in on the apprehensions of one specific Jedi: Keeve Trennis. Throughout Marvel’s High Republic saga, Keeve has emerged as a key figure. She has faced numerous challenges without flinching, always questioning herself. Following recent occurrences, she now questions the very foundations of the Jedi Order. As we learned from the 2019 audio drama, Dooku: Jedi Lost, Keeve ultimately becomes one of the Lost, a group of departed Jedi Masters. The final installment will uncover the reasons behind her departure.
In the series “The Acolyte,” we meet Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi Master. Interestingly, he appears as a guest star in “Fear of the Jedi.” Knowing the eventual fate of Kelnacca from “The Acolyte” influenced how I developed his background story in an intriguing way. How did this knowledge affect your approach to crafting Kelnacca’s backstory?
Although his role wasn’t significant, I swiftly moved on to drafting the “Fear of the Jedi” script, following up from last year’s Kelnacca one-shot as a tie-in to “The Acolyte.” It was delightful to reintroduce his Padawan Yarzion Vell in this process. I enjoy how seamlessly these Star Wars stories interconnect, and the stern – sometimes abrupt – character of Kelnacca is always enjoyable to pen.
In one of your earlier High Republic tales, Keeve Trennis was a significant figure, and she takes center stage in this story. I’m curious about your thoughts regarding her character development, and whether it’s unfolding as you had initially envisioned in the opening chapters.
All my work on Keeve’s storyline has been building towards this climactic moment. On the very same day I released issue one five years ago, I penned her final scene. Over the years, I’ve known where her journey was leading. Writing it into the script for the last issue was an emotional experience. While some aspects had to be adjusted due to character and plot development over time, the core of the scene remains much as I wrote it back in 2020, when I saved it under the ominous title ‘The End!’.
Keeve holds great significance for me, just like her Jedi master Sskeer does. It’s an unusual sensation, as if I’ve been witnessing her development throughout a story, and now she’s right where I always thought she would be. I am deeply proud of the collective success we’ve had with this project, particularly during our Marvel run. Over 40 issues filled with narrative? That’s no trivial accomplishment, and it’s all thanks to the readers who have stood by us throughout this journey.
In conclusion, what elements of ‘Fear of the Jedi’ are you eager for Star Wars fans to witness and engage with, and could you share any insights (if available) regarding what comes after Phase III?
Beyond Keeve’s destiny, Tey and Lourna Dee have trials ahead, which I’ll sorely miss penning! “Fear of the Jedi” encompasses everything I cherish in “Star Wars”. Thrilling adventures, aerial battles, colossal beasts, and heart-wrenching character interactions that leave you tearful one moment and comforted the next. Regarding the future, beyond Phase III, this is the culmination of our storyline since 2018; however, it’s not the end for the “High Republic” as a whole. New tales are yet to be spun…
