This week, some of the biggest film studios gathered under the bright lights of Las Vegas for CinemaCon, a convention focusing on movies aimed at investors and media. Although most of the content displayed wasn’t yet available to the general public, we received plenty of details about numerous upcoming and previously undisclosed projects. Studios like Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, Sony, and Lionsgate made exciting announcements that left fans thrilled, whether it validated long-held theories or presented surprising comebacks.
Initially, Sony presented its future projects, but the standout element centered on a single figure: Spider-Man. We learned the exact date for the animated film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, set for June 17, 2027. However, we received confirmation about the new title for Spider-Man 4, now known as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, echoing a well-known comic book storyline. The event concluded with the announcement of The Beatles biopics, all directed by Sam Mendes from Skyfall and planned for simultaneous release in 2028. These films will feature Paul Mescal from Gladiator 2 as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn from The Fantastic Four: First Steps as George Harrison, Barry Keoghan from Saltburn as Ringo Starr, and Harris Dickinson from The King’s Man as John Lennon.
On day two, we saw exciting updates from Lionsgate and Warner Bros. regarding their beloved franchises. Lionsgate is reviving John Wick 5 with Keanu Reeves returning to his role, despite initial speculation that he was finished with it. Additionally, an animated prequel and a film centered around Donnie Yen are also in the works. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. offered a sneak peek at Superman, revealing intricate details of Superman and the Fortress of Solitude.
On the third and fourth days, things concluded in a grand fashion with Universal and Disney taking center stage. The much-hyped but surprising unveiling of the live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” occurred, well ahead of its original release date. For horror enthusiasts, a peek at their upcoming releases for the year was provided, featuring the mind-boggling “M3GAN 2.0” and the adaptation of “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”. On the Disney side, sneak peeks were given for “Tron: Ares”, “Avatar: Fire and Water”, “Zootopia 2”, and “Fantastic Four: First Steps”. The latter also presented the debut of Silver Surfer in the “Fantastic Four” and Sue Storm’s pregnancy.
