CBS’ FBI Stars Didn’t Spoil Isobel’s Fate After Life-Or-Death Finale Cliffhanger, But I Love Their Pitches For ‘Jumping The Shark’ Spinoffs

Viewers of Dick Wolf’s CBS shows were aware that the finales for FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International would be their last, but nobody anticipated that FBI would end with a nail-biting cliffhanger for one of the main characters. Unlike its previous seasons, this one seemed to be wrapping up with the good guys prevailing and the bad guys defeated, leaving viewers content as they went on hiatus. However, it turns out that Isobel’s life is in danger!

Alana De La Garza and Jeremy Sisto didn’t reveal future events on TopMob, but they made a delightful pair during interviews after showing a “scary” finale. While avoiding spoilers, these FBI stars brainstormed exciting spinoff ideas and amusing theories about Isobel’s collapse without a pulse at the end of Season 7 finale. During our conversation, I couldn’t help but ask if De La Garza would be back for Season 8. The Law & Order veteran playfully hinted:

You never know, so keep your eyes open! You need to watch Season 8 to find out if I’m still alive. Will she survive? How does she manage to stay alive? Is there really a call coming in? Or is she turning into a zombie…in the FBI’s Zombie Apocalypse scenario, she simply reappears.

In my opinion, if any TV series could successfully tackle a procedural focused on zombies, it would be quite possible in the universe created by Dick Wolf, which encompasses shows like FBI, Chicago Fire/PD/Med, and Law & Order. However, Jeremy Sisto wasn’t initially keen on the concept of Zombie Apocalypse: FBI, and there were debates among the cast about the potential for a spinoff with supernatural elements.

  • Jeremy Sisto: “I don’t think that’s a good idea. That would be jumping the shark for sure.”
  • Alana De La Garza: “We’ll ask Dick [Wolf].”
  • Jeremy Sisto: “Has Dick ever done a vampire [show]? I don’t think he has. A zombie thing?”
  • Alana De La Garza: “I don’t think so. Blood and gore, but not that kind.”

Dick Wolf’s collection of TV series produced by Wolf Entertainment encompasses shows like “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Chicago Med,” and also “FBI.” (In the future, “CIA” will contribute to this lineup on CBS.) Despite their diverse themes, they share a distinct characteristic – they steer clear of supernatural elements such as zombies or vampires.

As a movie enthusiast, I recently delved into the emotional turmoil that unfolded in the seventh season of a popular series, now accessible on Paramount+. The talented Jeremy Sisto, once known for his role in Clueless, eloquently explored the profound implications of losing Isobel, following her decisive action with no remorse.

It’s massive, there’s no denying it. The mere thought of losing Isobel left us all bewildered and asking questions like ‘What’s happening?’. Whatever emotions the fans are experiencing, we’ve shared them too, albeit with a slight difference – we know some results, but not all. We can’t disclose what we do or don’t know.

In the closing moments of that unforgettable episode, even as the stars shared their light-hearted banter, there wasn’t a single smile exchanged when the final credits began to roll. As Maggie and Jubal watched Isobel struggle with her lines, something truly heart-stopping happened – the ASAC unexpectedly crumpled to the ground, lifeless. It turns out that head injury I had feared from the previews was far more severe than it initially appeared!

Jubal had a special habit of addressing her as “ma’am” whenever something seemed amiss, but changed it to “Isobel!” upon her collapse. After witnessing that heartbreaking finale, I found it amusing that De La Garza and Sisto kept proposing more far-fetched possibilities for the future. They shared with me:

  • Alana De La Garza: “We cannot divulge.”
  • Jeremy Sisto: “That’s the idea of it. Either I’m extremely saddened right now because she’s not coming back, and I’m hiding that from you.”
  • Alana De La Garza: “He is a good actor!”
  • Jeremy Sisto: “Or she is coming back and you’ll just have to wait and see. I’m hiding that too. That’s what we’re supposed to be doing here. I’m playing the middle.”

Instead of Maggie revealing to the gathered agents that Isobel was pulseless immediately following their significant triumph against the villains who had infiltrated the Bureau, it was the biggest suspenseful ending after Season 7 credits. I was thrilled that FBI received an early renewal for Season 8 due to this unexpected plot twist, and now, here’s a possible explanation provided by the actors regarding Isobel’s missing pulse.

  • Jeremy Sisto: “She doesn’t have a pulse. I checked again, still no pulse. Maybe she just doesn’t have a pulse. That’s the other thing. They cut out the part where I was like, ‘Maggie, it’s fine. She just doesn’t have a pulse.’”
  • Alana De La Garza: “‘Just leave her there. It’s fine.'”

In the upcoming season, will we immediately see the FBI’s response in the aftermath of Isobel’s collapse at the end of the fall cliffhanger, or will the storyline progress as if time has passed within the universe since Isobel’s apparent demise in spring without a pulse? Last year, Season 7 began with the departure of a series regular following a time jump, but Katherine Renee Kane’s character, Tiff Wallace, was able to depart alive and well. What can we expect for Isobel this season?

For the time being, it’s just a guess, but at least you might find that Paramount+ provides all episodes of the series available for a summer break re-watch.
