CD Projekt RED VP of Technology Believes Switch 2’s Faster Storage, RAM and DLSS Make it Better Than PS4, Xbox One

The anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is believed to surpass its predecessor, the Switch, in terms of handheld gaming power. Remarkably, it seems capable of matching the performance of last-gen consoles such as PS4 and Xbox One. In an interview with IGN, Charles Tremblay, vice president of technology at CD Projekt RED, discussed the potential capabilities of the upcoming Switch 2 in relation to its version of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for these consoles.

As stated by Tremblay, not only does the Switch 2 leverage Nvidia’s DLSS technology, but its performance is also significantly boosted by its enhanced RAM and storage speeds. Initially, he anticipated a greater hurdle, but to his surprise, it turned out to be less daunting than expected. However, he did mention that considerable modifications needed to be made to the engine powering Cyberpunk 2077 to adapt it for the Switch 2. This is because the game was originally designed with the x86 architecture, which is prevalent in current-day consoles and high-end gaming computers.

Tremblay clarified that ‘Cyberpunk’ was specifically designed for x86 systems with older PC architecture. As a result, the project required extensive modifications at its core, including alterations to the engine and a translation of all shaders from one language to another. The Switch 2’s architecture is significantly distinct.

Nevertheless, the essential adjustments were accomplished due to a team that initially was compact. Over time, the second edition of Cyberpunk 2077 for Switch started shaping up. Tremblay also touched upon how DLSS being accessible on Nintendo’s forthcoming console enhances the Switch 2 version of the game compared to the original PS4 and Xbox One versions, as well as other contemporary advantages such as faster storage and memory.

Tremblay stated, “The earlier console generations posed significant challenges. One major issue was the mechanical hard drive, a crucial aspect we were keen to avoid.

He noted that the Switch 2 boasts increased RAM compared to its predecessor, a crucial aspect as well.

The PS4 and Xbox One used hard drives spinning at approximately 5600 RPM for data storage, which placed them on par with older laptop drives in terms of read and write speeds. Both systems also came equipped with just 8 GB of RAM. In contrast, contemporary consoles boast faster storage solutions, such as SSDs (Solid State Drives), that store game files at high speed. These can then be quickly transferred into even swifter RAM for smoother gaming performance.

Tremblay discussed the benchmark targets set by the studio for the Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077, emphasizing that a frame rate below 30 frames per second would not be acceptable under any circumstances. In other words, if it drops below 30fps, he believes it’s not satisfactory. He added there’s no room for compromise, stating that the game should maintain a consistent 30fps across all areas.

On June 5, the enhanced version of Cyberpunk 2077, titled “Ultimate Edition,” is set to debut among the initial games for the Nintendo Switch 2.
