As someone who has spent countless hours exploring the neon-lit streets of Night City, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when it comes to the prospect of a PS5 Pro patch for Cyberpunk 2077.
Has any game’s transformation from failure to success been as remarkable as Cyberpunk 2077, given its rocky launch in 2020? Despite the well-known issues with its debut, CD Projekt Red has put in an extraordinary effort over the years to meet their initial promises of delivering a dystopian masterpiece. Many players have regained trust in them, while others refuse to spend money on their games. Regardless, most people will be taken aback by CD Projekt Red’s statement that they have no intention of updating Cyberpunk 2077 to work with the PS5 Pro.
Despite there being solid reasons for this viewpoint, let’s discuss them shortly. Even die-hard fans of Cyberpunk 2077 might be disappointed that the game seems to be wrapping up its life cycle with a whimper. Given that the game is renowned for pushing technological limits, particularly on PC, it feels somewhat unfulfilled when played on consoles like Xbox Series X and PS5, despite their impressive performance. The graphics and details in Night City are unparalleled, but considering how much more powerful PCs are compared to consoles, one can’t help but feel that the game could have achieved even more on these platforms. There’s a sense of missed opportunity since we’ve seen numerous games significantly improve following their release on Sony’s mid-generation refresh. One might wonder if Cyberpunk 2077 has fully redeemed itself without making such improvements.
It’s only fair to acknowledge that CD Projekt Red has a substantial workload ahead. They are currently developing The Witcher 4, the first game in a new trilogy, and also working on Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, which is still in its early stages. In fact, they plan to double the number of developers working on Project Orion by 2025. Additionally, they are working on a new multiplayer game within The Witcher series and an unannounced, brand-new intellectual property that has moved past pre-production. Considering all these projects, it might seem that they have completed their work on Cyberpunk 2077, or perhaps they need a break to focus on something new. Alternatively, the sheer number of projects could suggest that they are short-staffed.
Alongside the free update titled “Phantom Liberty,” players on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S have received an extensive overhaul in version 2.0. This update brings refinements to the skill trees, a more aggressive police force, vehicular combat, enhanced AI gunplay, additional netrunning perks, changes to cyberware implementation, distinct weapon feel, balance and economic adjustments, scaled loot, new radio stations, an improved user interface, more secrets, performance and stability fixes, and much more. While it’s impressive that these improvements are offered free of charge, some argue that many of these updates should have been included in the game at its initial release. Is CD Projekt Red deserving of praise for providing what was initially expected, whether or not it comes at no cost?
It’s challenging not to feel jaded about the situation. While it was minimal effort for them to deliver on their initial promise with a free update, it’s also clear that the team dedicated significant effort and passion to improving Cyberpunk 2077. However, it seems that the decision to release an unplayable game at first might have been a boardroom call. It’s unfortunate but common in the industry for games to be released unfinished, only to be fixed later. But in CD Projekt Red’s case, this strategy hurt their shareholders and the company’s stock price significantly.
If CD Projekt Red were to change their stance on not creating a PS5 Pro upgrade, they might consider including some popular mods as part of the update, similar to what they did for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s next-gen upgrade. This update offered improved graphics, new content, refined mechanics, better performance, and integrated several mods into the main game. Notably, this enhancement was provided free of charge by CD Projekt Red, as is their custom.
The modifications in question significantly enhance features like fast travel, crafting, the design and operation of the game world map, and numerous other aspects, with credit given to their creators, making it a thoughtful addition. In an ideal scenario, these improvements would be incorporated into a future PlayStation 5 Pro update for Cyberpunk 2077. For instance, DJ_Kovrik’s Revised Backpack mod offers a substantial overhaul of the inventory system that you’ll find hard to imagine living without, New Level Cap raises the level cap to 80, allowing you to eventually master all skills, and Unlock Global Illumination provides a plethora of graphical options beyond lighting adjustments are merely three mods that could feasibly be implemented by CD Projekt Red into a PS5 Pro patch.
Despite not receiving a specific PS5 Pro update, Cyberpunk 2077, like many other games, has significantly improved performance on the PS5 Pro due to its advanced hardware. While Night City’s visual splendor is undeniable, there are instances where frame rates can momentarily lag, particularly in densely populated areas. However, these stutters are less pronounced on the Pro version, if they occur at all. In crowded, demanding scenes, the PS5 Pro offers a more fluid gaming experience compared to the base model. Engaging in battles with numerous NCPD officers will reveal only occasional drops, depending on the location. Given this, one might question whether Cyberpunk 2077 really requires a dedicated PS5 Pro patch.
If they plan to update their game for the PS5 Pro, they’ll need to make it significant, perhaps by adding mods or similar features. However, since they haven’t done so yet, it seems we’re back to the same point discussed earlier. It appears that CD Projekt Red may not have enough resources to develop a worthwhile PS5 Pro patch, given their ongoing projects. While it might seem like a poor decision not to create a PS5 Pro patch currently, we can only hope that this choice will prove beneficial once more details about the scale of The Witcher 4 and the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 become available.
