Though Channing isn’t verbose, he communicates profoundly through his eyes, emotions, laughter, and zest for life. He’s shown us that love doesn’t require words and to appreciate the small wonders, such as observing leaves dance in the wind and bubbles pop on the ground. To know him is to adore him, and being his mother is the most extraordinary blessing I’ve received. In just five years with him, I’ve learned more about life than I did in the preceding 30 years.

Mom Gina McCloskey:
At 18 months old, my son Michael was identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and epilepsy. He remained nonverbal until age five, spent years in specialized placements within and outside the district, up until sixth grade. However, despite these challenges, I am thrilled to announce that he is now a nearly 17-year-old young man who lives an active, successful, and inclusive life among his peers. He is learning to drive, has a passion for mathematics and history, but his most significant achievement so far was earning a spot on Team NJ for the Special Olympics, which will take him to Orlando in June for the 2022 USA Games as a Track & Field athlete. Michael views autism not as a limitation, but as a unique trait that empowers him and serves as an inspiration to those around him.
