In today’s entertainment landscape, live-action adaptations of anime series are highly sought after, as evidenced by Netflix’s success with titles such as “One Piece” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. To keep classic anime franchises alive, Japan is producing new movies. For instance, while “Cells At Work” doesn’t have an ongoing series chronicling the lives of White and Red Blood Cells, Warner Bros. Japan has still ventured back into the microscopic battlefield. Even though the manga version has concluded, the creator of “Cells At Work”, Akane Shimizu, has shared new artwork to reignite fan excitement.
In terms of the box office performance of “Cells At Work” as a live-action film, it has amassed over $40 million USD in Japan since its release in December of the previous year. As of now, Warner Bros. Japan hasn’t announced whether it will be distributed in North America, but given its success, it seems likely that it may become available there in some way or another at a later time. It’s not always the case that films successful in Japan will achieve similar results in North America, but considering the popularity of “Cells At Work,” it would make sense for it to be released on home video in North America.
A Gift For Cell Fans
Akane Shimizu initially launched the series back in 2015, concluding it in 2021 with a unique one-shot focusing on the cells combating COVID-19, aiming to educate anime enthusiasts about the pandemic. Although the primary Cells At Work series has concluded, various spin-offs like Cells At Work: Muscle, Cells At Work: Cat, and Cells At Work: Medicine have continued to explore this universe in amusing ways, even as Shimizu is no longer involved in their production.
Shimizu recently released fresh artwork and a heartfelt message to fans in order to boost the popularity of the live-action film. Here’s Akane’s statement, “I’m thrilled that many people have enjoyed the movie ‘Cells at Work’! I’d like to extend my deep appreciation to everyone who has been with me on this journey!
The movie, “Taraku-cell,” has surpassed the box office of 62 billion yen. This illustration of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets stacking up, created by author Sawayama Kaori (@yellow_flame_), has arrived. I am very happy that many people are enjoying the movie! I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported it.

Live-Action Anime Future
At present, Netflix is currently developing the second season of the live-action adaptation of One Piece and the following two seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender. These aren’t the only exciting anime projects making a splash; live-action adaptations of Mobile Suit Gundam, My Hero Academia, Naruto, among others, are also in production. While live-action anime has been a subject of debate for quite some time due to concerns about staying true to their source material, recent ventures have paved the way for innovation.
