2024 saw the arrival of “Centuria” by Tohru Kuramori, a gripping dark shonen manga that resonated deeply with me. I found myself immersed in the tale of Julian, a young boy driven to desperation after his mother sold him into slavery. To escape this cruel fate, he stowed away on a slave ship and, upon discovery, was forced to endure the hardships of slavery.
However, amidst the misery, Julian found a glimmer of hope in the camaraderie amongst his fellow slaves. A bond formed with Mira, a pregnant woman who took him under her wing, treating him like her own son. But heartbreak was just around the corner, as an unforeseen tragedy left me powerless to help those who had shown kindness towards me.
In an instant, the ship’s captain orchestrated a horrific massacre of the slaves, unwittingly summoning a mysterious sea entity in the process. This chilling turn of events sets the stage for the gripping narrative that unfolds in “Centuria.” The story leaves you questioning the depths to which humanity can sink and the power that lies within us to rise above adversity.
Instead of giving 100 slaves’ blood to gain their collective strength and live on, Julian receives this bargain with Mira among them. Empowered, Julian ventures forth to nurture Mira’s newborn child, Diana, offering her the affection she requires. Yet, the road to liberation remains arduous for him as more harrowing ordeals await the young boy. Kuramori is an ex-assistant of Tatsuki Fujimoto, who created Chainsaw Man. Although he’s worked on various one-shot mangas before, Centuria marks his debut serialization. In a recent interview, Kuramori discusses the most heartbreaking death in the narrative to date.

Centuria Creator Talks About Angvall’s Death in the Manga
Manga Plus is marking its sixth birthday and has planned two sets of interviews. The first set featuring creators of “Ichi the Witch”, “Centuria”, and “Hero Organization” is now available. On February 4th, interviews with the makers of “Dandadan”, “RuriDragon”, and “Witch Watch” will be released. As a part of the celebration, Manga Plus will award 20 t-shirts to winners of a lucky draw. In one of these interviews, Tohru Kuramori, creator of “Centuria”, discusses a specific scene that stands out for him.
The artist mentions that the scene where Angvall dies in chapter 21 was meticulously planned since the beginning of the manga, and he dedicated extra effort to its depiction because Angvall, who first appeared in chapter 3 and quickly became a cherished character, played a significant role as Commander Knight, also known as the “King’s Spear.” She was well-known for her prowess as a warrior and provided support to Julian and Diana during a challenging period. Unfortunately, she succumbs to Arkos, the king’s son, who is one of the main adversaries in Centuria, making his entrance in chapter 10. Arkos is characterized by his arrogant and nihilistic personality.
During the same interview, Kuramori shares that Arkos is his preferred character. He relishes portraying the villain’s intense, malevolent expressions to their fullest extent. The villain eliminates Angvall not just to eliminate a threat but also to anger and provoke Julian. The loss of Angvall leaves a profound impact on Julian and Titi, particularly Titi who grew up under her care. Upon seeing her, Julian experiences both sadness and fury. Together, Julian and Joseph perform a burial ritual for Angvall near the village where she once safeguarded the group. As she was respected by the villagers, they all attended a memorial service to honor her memory.
