Challengers Director Rumored to Be in Talks for DCU Project

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in the multiverse of DC and Marvel, this news about Luca Guadagnino potentially joining James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe has me both intrigued and excited!

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe could be courting a surprising director. On Tuesday, a new report from Jeff Sneider claimed that Luca Guadagnino, who most recently directed the hit drama Challengers, has been in talks to direct a project within DC Studios’ new DCU. The report stresses that Guadagnino is not officially attached to any of the franchise’s projects, just that there is “mutual interest” between the two parties, and that he is high on Gunn and Safran’s list of potential directors they have met with.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t say for certain if Luca Guadagnino, renowned for his work in films like “Call Me By Your Name” and the upcoming “Queer,” will be directing a project within the DC Universe. The details are still hazy as to whether this potential project is an entirely new concept or one of the ten titles announced by Gunn and Safran earlier in 2023. At present, only “The Authority” lacks a director among the confirmed DCU films, with James Gunn directing “Superman” for 2025, Craig Gillespie taking on “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” in 2026, and both James Mangold and Andy Muschietti attached to “Swamp; The Brave and the Bold. Gunn and Safran have already been assigned for “Superman,” “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” “Swamp Thing,” and “The Brave and the Bold.” So, while we wait for more news, let’s enjoy the anticipation!

What Is on the DC Universe Slate?

At DC Studios, we’re planning to launch our initial lineup with “Superman” set for 2025, followed by “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” in 2026. Among the movies yet to be given specific dates are “The Brave and the Bold,” “Swamp Thing,” and “The Authority.” Additionally, we’re developing a few TV shows for HBOOSTensuresultimately undated shows on HBOoster our television series such as well as well as-undated projects like “Waller,” “Booster Gold,” “Lanterns,” “Paradise Lost,” and an animated “Creature Commandos” series on HBO Max. There are rumors that a live-action “Teen Titans” movie and an animated “Jurassic League” film are in development, but nothing has been made official yet.

2023 saw Gunn clarify, “Many believe we’re replicating Marvel 2.0, but let me assure you, there are significant differences.” He continued, “At Marvel, I gathered a wealth of knowledge, but our approach is uniquely ours. We’re crafting an extensive central narrative similar to Marvel, yet more intricately plotted from the outset due to a collective of writers shaping it thoroughly. Additionally, we’re developing a universe akin to Star Wars or Game of Thrones, with varying timelines, locations, and characters who are morally complex.”
