Channing Tatum Returning as Gambit? Ryan Reynolds Says Marvel Is ”Obsessed”

As a film enthusiast who has been following the X-Men saga for decades, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon hearing Ryan Reynolds’ endorsement of Channing Tatum‘s portrayal of Gambit in “Deadpool & Wolverine”. Having witnessed the struggle to bring this character to life on screen since the early 2000s, it’s heartening to see such a talented actor like Tatum finally get his chance.

In the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine”, Channing Tatum played the role of Gambit, a character that had been long associated with him. Reportedly, Ryan Reynolds suggested that Marvel was pleased with his performance. Gambit was one of several unexpected characters in “Deadpool & Wolverine”, including Chris Evans as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney / X-23. Since 20th Century Fox began developing a Gambit film which was later abandoned, this role finally allowed Tatum to fulfill his youthful aspirations. Although it’s unclear if we’ll see more of Gambit in the future, Reynolds hinted that Marvel took notice of Tatum’s portrayal.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast regarding Channing Tatum’s Gambit, Reynolds stated that he isn’t privy to the inner workings of Marvel’s bookkeeping sessions, but he can confirm that there’s a strong enthusiasm for Tatum in this role. It seems quite similar to what I experienced. Once they see it’s effective, that’s essentially what they’re looking for. At times, all they need is to witness it in action.

The scenario Ryan Reynolds mentioned revolves around the leaked test footage of Deadpool back in 2014. When Fox witnessed the enthusiasm it sparked among Deadpool fans, they agreed to make a film with Reynolds as the character known as the Merc With a Mouth. The first Deadpool movie was released in 2016 and garnered significant success, leading to Deadpool 2 hitting theaters in 2018. Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Deadpool and Wolverine officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as X-Men characters.

Additionally, Channing’s unique portrayal of that role stands out,” Reynolds noted, “and his physical beauty is captivating too, from his graceful movements to his ability to master dance steps.

On previous occasions, Ryan Reynolds has expressed admiration for Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit in the Deadpool and Wolverine film. Following the release of the third Deadpool movie, Reynolds publicly acknowledged Tatum’s performance on social media with words of appreciation.

“Chan was destined to play the role of Gambit, as evidenced by Reynolds’ Instagram post featuring photos of Tatum in his Gambit costume. Both have spent a decade working to bring the most faithful comic book adaptation of this character to the big screen. Remy LeBeau is deeply rooted within Chan, and he feels it’s time for him to portray this complex, intelligent, yet underutilized character.

Reynolds went on to say, ‘I can’t help but want more, and judging by what I saw in theaters, you feel the same way.’ He emphasized that saying goodbye to some of these heroes is just as significant as meeting new ones to support. When it comes to Gambit, it’s a breeze to root for him. Cheering for Chan is even simpler because he’s one of the best, hardest working, and kindest individuals in this industry. I couldn’t be more excited to see @channingtatum resurrect Gambit and bring him back to life at the perfect moment and in the ideal way.
