Charlie Cox Comments on Daredevil in the Avengers Movies (and Spider-Man 4)

Charlie Cox shares insights on Daredevil’s prospective role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, expressing optimism about the character gracing high-profile films. In a chat with GQ, the actor delved into his journey within the franchise and touched upon rumors suggesting Daredevil might feature in upcoming Avengers productions. Though Cox refrained from divulging any details, he did suggest that teaming up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is now more plausible than it has been in previous years and elaborated on his reasons for wanting the character to shine on the big screen. Besides being enthused by the Marvel universe’s potential, he also expressed hopes that such an appearance could bolster his acting career overall.

Cox expressed his belief that there’s a higher chance than ever before for Avengers rumors to be true. He shared his desire to appear in an Avengers film, another Spider-Man production, or something similar. His reasons are twofold: first, he has grown fond of the character over time and feels it would be exciting for the character’s development; second, he believes it could boost his opportunities for future movie roles.

Charlie Cox first appeared as Matt Murdock in the 2015 Netflix series “Daredevil”, part of their Defenders collection. However, after “Daredevil” ended in 2018, his character was absent from screens until he made a brief appearance in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Later on, Cox reprised the role of Daredevil in 2022’s “She-Hulk”, and this year, he is back as the lead in “Daredevil: Born Again”, which will premiere on Disney+ in March. Interestingly, a second season for this series has already been confirmed.

Marvel Studios is steadily moving towards the conclusion of their ongoing Multiverse Storyline, highlighted by “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. The former is set to commence filming soon, bringing together a star-studded cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, the actors from “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, as well as the cast of “Thunderbolts”. Nestled between these two Avengers films is a fourth Spider-Man movie featuring Tom Holland, which will commence filming later this year.

Fans are thrilled at the prospect that Cox hinted Daredevil might join the Avengers since the Defenders series occupied a unique position in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although they alluded to the broader franchise, their characters never made it to the big screen. However, there’s been more integration recently, with Defenders characters appearing in various Marvel Studios projects. For example, Vincent D’Onofrio reprised Kingpin on the Hawkeye TV show. With Marvel showing increased interest in merging the two, following the creative revamp of Daredevil: Born Again, there’s an opportunity for more interconnected storylines in the future. The charm of the MCU lies in seeing characters interact, and it would be a pity if Defenders characters were excluded from major crossover events.

In the upcoming film “Doomsday“, it seems that the lineup of The Avengers will need to be revamped. It’s possible that Daredevil could join this new team, piquing Sam Wilson’s interest as he assembles a fresh squad. However, if Daredevil doesn’t make the cut for one of the upcoming Avengers films, it’s quite possible that he might appear in “Spider-Man 4“, given the strong bond between Daredevil and Spider-Man in the comics. Some enthusiasts are hoping that “Spider-Man 4” will present Peter Parker with a street-level threat, which would be an excellent opportunity to bring Daredevil into the mix. Given Charlie Cox’s popularity as Daredevil, it’s likely that Marvel will find a role for him in future projects.
