In the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again”, Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox), who was once the blind lawyer turned vigilante known as Daredevil, has been absent from his Devil of Hell’s Kitchen persona for some time. In the show’s trailer, he tells Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) that a boundary was breached, hinting at why he ceased wearing the horn-headed vigilante costume. However, when personal struggles drive Matt to resume his pursuit of justice in the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, we see him first don a red balaclava taken from an armed assailant and later a redesigned armored suit of unclear origin. This could mean some changes to his appearance.
When inquired about Daredevil’s distinctive “Double D” symbol, Cox responded by choosing not to offer any insights on the matter to ComicBook.
As a devoted cinephile, here’s my take on breaking down the latest buzz surrounding “Daredevil: Born Again”: Unraveling its links within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the cast members expected to reprise their roles in this upcoming series.
Intriguingly, Cox hinted that it could be on the cards for Matt Murdock, my favorite character, to don various cowl versions as suggested in the trailer. Among these is a silver cowl resembling Daredevil’s black armor, a black cowl echoing his Shadowland appearance, and the iconic yellow suit with red accents from She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a nod to his original boxer-inspired suit from the early comics.
The suit worn by Daredevil has been through various changes since his initial, all-black costume inspired by the ‘Man Without Fear’. This was seen during Marvel’s Daredevil season 1. After Melvin Potter crafted his original suit with a horned helmet, armor, and padding, which was destroyed, he adopted a new appearance. In his brief role in the Echo series, Daredevil showcased a different design. More recently, while in Los Angeles for She-Hulk, Matt commissioned a fashion designer named Luke Jacobson to create the ‘Gold Devil’ suit.
In the upcoming series “Born Again”, viewers might not see the return of that specific costume, as showrunner Dario Scardapane has mentioned that the show, rated TV-MA, is moving away from Matt’s lighter moments with Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters. The series seems to be focusing on a more serious tone.
Daredevil is recognized as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and certain events involving him have taken place. However, not all these events are being fully explored, such as his one-night stand with She-Hulk.” (Scardapane stated this to SFX Magazine.)
The highly-anticipated Marvel TV series “Daredevil: Reborn” featuring Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, with Ayelet Zurer and Jon Bernthal reprising their roles as Frank Castle/the Punisher, will make its debut on Disney+ starting March 4.
