What you need to know
- ChatGPT recently hit a major milestone, surpassing 200 million weekly active users.
- OpenAI attributes the platform’s growth to GPT-4o’s launch, with 92% of Fortune 500 companies leveraging its products and services.
- Meta’s Llama AI also surpassed 400 million monthly active users and 40 million daily active users, potentially contending for ChatGPT’s top seat.
As a tech enthusiast and avid user of AI chatbots, I must say that this recent news has left me both amazed and amused! The rapid growth of both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta’s Llama AI is nothing short of phenomenal. It’s like watching two giants striding towards each other, their footsteps echoing in the vast digital landscape.
Currently, ChatGPT by OpenAI is one of the world’s leading AI-powered conversation models. It debuted towards the end of 2022 and since then, it has consistently been refined with significant updates and innovative features, enhancing its abilities substantially.
This week, the chatbot hit a mega milestone. ChatGPT has surpassed 200 million weekly active users (via Axios). This is twice as many users as it had one year ago.
Based on information from OpenAI, a significant part of ChatGPT’s wide user base is made up of Fortune 500 companies. Furthermore, it was mentioned that an impressive 92% of these corporations utilize its offerings. Moreover, the usage of ChatGPT’s automated API saw a substantial increase after GPT-4o became available to the public.
It’s worth noting that a separate report by Appfigures revealed that the debut of GPT-4o resulted in an unprecedented increase in revenue and downloads for ChatGPT on mobile devices. However, OpenAI’s ChatGMT is not without competition. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic are developing their own AI-driven chatbots, which come equipped with capabilities comparable to those of ChatGPT.
Meta’s AI is holding its own, too
In a significant development, Meta’s Llama AI has achieved an impressive feat. It now boasts over 400 million monthly active users and approximately 40 million daily active users. This substantial user base could pose a challenge to ChatGPT. As per Meta’s reports:
“The use of Llama, as measured by the amount of tokens, has nearly tripled since its release in May 2024 (Llama 3.1) across our primary cloud service provider partners within a span of three months up until July 2024.”
As a tech enthusiast, I couldn’t help but notice that after making waves in the mobile world, OpenAI took a significant step by launching the ChatGPT desktop application exclusively for Mac users. The company seems to be focusing on where its users are most prevalent, which unfortunately doesn’t seem to include Windows users at this time, despite Microsoft’s substantial investment in the platform.
Apart from that, Windows 11 comes pre-installed with Microsoft Copilot, which leverages technology from OpenAI. It will be intriguing to observe how OpenAI’s ChatGPT functions on Macs, given Apple’s new AI strategy is now built into these devices – Apple’s native intelligence.
