Cheers’ Norm Star George Wendt Passes Away at 76, Leaving a Legacy of Laughter

As a huge fan, I’m sad to share that George Wendt, who beautifully crafted the art of barstool chatter as Norm Peterson on the legendary NBC sitcom “Cheers,” passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Los Angeles residence this Tuesday morning. He was 76 years old.

The representation of Norm, the character known for his quick wit, love for beer, and regular bar visits that were greeted with “Norm!”, was essential to Cheers’ popularity. His acting talent led to six consecutive Emmy nominations and he appeared in every one of the show’s 273 episodes, even during its emotional finale in 1993.

George Wendt Jr., born on October 17, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, began his comedic journey at Second City, where he initially cleaned floors before making it to the stage. He subsequently achieved fame with the debut of Cheers in 1982, eventually gaining widespread acclaim and becoming one of the most revered sitcoms on television.

A flood of tributes from Wendt’s fellow Cheers cast members arrived, creating an image of a man who was cherished just as much away from the screen as he was on it.

Ratzenberger went on to say, “He was a genuine artisan – modest, funny, and brimming with warmth. On-screen, he was no different from who he was off-screen, displaying exceptional comedic skill and unwavering loyalty towards those dear to him. I’ll dearly miss our chats and the cherished moments of friendship that held the greatest value.

As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share my personal recollections about George Wendt, who brought the unforgettable character of Norm Peterson to life on Cheers. Rhea Perlman, who played Carla Tortelli, beautifully captured the essence of the man behind the humor: “George Wendt was the most genuine, compassionate individual I’ve ever encountered. It was simply impossible not to adore him. In our scenes together, with Norm always stationed at the end of the bar, we had countless opportunities for me to give him a good-natured beating – at least once a week! I relished these moments and he played along wonderfully, feigning pain. What a character! My heart aches more than words can express with his passing.

NBC Entertainment also released a statement honoring the late actor.

Each Thursday evening, America eagerly anticipated greeting Norm as he strolled through the door and settled at his usual barstool. George Wendt was instrumental in the brilliance of Cheers, and he will be deeply mourned by the countless fans who adored him. Despite being widely recognized for his role as Norm, George Wendt boasted a multifaceted career that spanned many years. He graced the screens in movies like Fletch, Forever Young, and The Little Rascals, and he dabbled in numerous television roles. In 1995, he spearheaded The George Wendt Show and left lasting impressions with his guest appearances on shows such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

George Wendt has made heaven more amusing, according to Melissa Joan Hart, who worked with him on Sabrina. She found it delightful to act alongside him… He was always approachable, dedicated, and considerate, and our cast and crew were fortunate to have his company every time he was around.

Besides his screen roles, Wendt was successful on the stage too; he notably played Edna Turnblad in the Broadway production of Hairspray and Santa Claus in the musical adaptation of Elf.

Wendt leaves behind his wife Bernadette Birkett, whom he was married to for 47 years, as well as their three children. In fact, Birkett is known in television history for providing the voice of Norm’s frequently mentioned yet unseen wife, Vera, on the iconic show “Cheers.
