Lately, Chelsea Handler has been exploring a new romance.
However, she isn’t ready to kiss and tell just yet.
The former Chelsea Lately star expressed on the February 4th episode of Alex Cooper’s podcast Call Her Daddy that she has been in a public relationship before, specifically her last one. She clarified that it’s not that she dislikes sharing about her love life. Instead, it’s about maintaining privacy for her partner, as she explained, “I don’t want him to be subjected to my sphere.
Nevertheless, Chelsea was prepared to divulge a bit of information – disclosing that she had encountered her secret paramour quite some time back, yet their relationship didn’t solidify into something more serious until roughly half a year to a year ago.
For quite some time now, the host of the 2025 Critics Choice Awards remarked, there’s an individual I’ve been acquainted with who’s captivated me for years. Regrettably, he wasn’t open to a relationship when I had feelings for him. However, I’ve always desired someone similar in my life – he’s incredibly attractive, remarkable, kind-hearted, considerate, and exceptionally perceptive. Yet, he acknowledges that I often lack availability.
As I, a lifestyle advisor, advocate for authenticity, I’m choosing to invest my energy only in those who are ready for the journey alongside me – those who embrace the spirit of living life on their own terms.
As a devoted admirer, I’d say my existence can get quite chaotic at times, but he understands and values it. He’s always there when I need him, and he never fails to impress me with his remarkable qualities.
However, the comedy star insisted she isn’t looking to settle down with someone anytime soon.
She confided that there are times when she has several romantic partners, which was her aspiration as a young girl. She desired to mature into a woman who had numerous lovers. Marriage was never appealing to her, nor were long-term commitments – be it to work, relationships, or anything else. She considers herself a free spirit, yearning to live and fly freely like an eagle, with an open heart and legs.
So when Chelsea enters a new relationship, she’s honest about what she wants.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, let me share my perspective: I’ve always admired the camaraderie that men bring into my life. To put it plainly, I crave experiences with numerous gentlemen, and I ensure my intentions are clear whether I’m involved in a relationship or any other situation – you get the gist? I’m straightforward, honest, and upfront about my desires. In essence, I ask, ‘Listen, here’s the deal. Are you game for this journey?’
At one point, Chelsea was deeply involved with Jo Koy. They had a longstanding friendship that extended over the years. In fact, he was a regular guest on her late-night talk show, Chelsea Lately, which aired from 2007 to 2014.
Looking back, it wasn’t until quite some time later that a small ember ignited between us. As I recounted to The Hollywood Reporter earlier, Jo posed the question to Chelsea in December 2020 if we could talk – to which she responded bluntly, “Not if you’re looking for a romantic entanglement.” Over the next eight months, our connection persisted, and it wasn’t until August 2021 that our relationship evolved from friendship into something more romantic.
Jo explained to the press that she essentially invited him for a kiss. However, Chelsea later clarified that she had expressed, “I believe you might have a crush on me, and if that’s the case, you should act on it and find out.
The following month, the pair made their relationship Instagram official.
In her conversation with THR, Chelsea Handler expressed, “When people hear me discussing how Jo has revitalized my trust in men, they might assume, ‘Wow, if even tough-talking Chelsea Handler can find love and become all sentimental, then perhaps it’s possible for anyone.’
It might be because Chelsea expressed her satisfaction with being single and viewed herself as an inspiration for other women who don’t necessarily need a family or partner to achieve happiness, as she once told TopMob News. Additionally, during her relationship with Jo, she consistently emphasized that one doesn’t require a romantic partnership to be content.
In an interview with TopMob in January 2022, the 49-year-old expressed that he had restored her trust in humanity in various ways. This encounter made her recall that it’s essential not to compromise and when others suggest settling down as you grow older, she stood firm on her conviction. She emphasized, “I can be as selective as I wish, I don’t require a partner.” Essentially, she lived a fulfilling life regardless of being single and never lowered her expectations. This serves as an encouragement for women and anyone yet to meet their significant other, that they should never settle for less than what they deserve.
When Chelsea realized that her relationship with Jo wasn’t living up to her expectations anymore, she understood it was the right moment for them to part ways. In July 2022, exactly a month before their first wedding anniversary, they officially announced their split.
She expressed that there were certain actions they couldn’t reconcile, and it seemed to her that she might have had to compromise her identity – something she might have been prepared to do when younger, but wasn’t ready for now. On an episode of Brooke Shields’ podcast “Now What?” in December 2022, she didn’t delve into the specific disagreements. Instead, she stated that despite her deep love for this person, she wouldn’t compromise herself. Consequently, she chose to end a relationship she believed would last forever. However, it seems that they parted ways amicably. In May 2023, Jo told People, “Our breakup was beautiful. It truly was.
Apart from jokingly referencing her ex’s Golden Globe speech during the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, Chelsea hasn’t delved deeply into discussions about Jo or their separation.
Or, in a more colloquial style:
Chelsea only made a witty remark about her ex regarding his Golden Globes monologue at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards; otherwise, she hasn’t said much about Jo and their breakup.
She explained to Parade in January that it’s unfair to reveal personal details about him. She once cared for him deeply and doesn’t wish to cause him pain. Moreover, she’s at a stage in her life where she no longer feels the need to disclose everything. Her split with Jo Koy marked the first time a relationship of mine ended maturely. I conducted myself with maturity and dignity throughout the process. I respected the relationship by never revealing the truth, and I admire that aspect of myself.
In fact, Chelsea added, “I don’t think I’ve spoken to Jo Koy since we broke up.”
Moving forward on their distinct paths, they’re savoring the ride: In June 2024, Jo premiered his Netflix special titled “Live From Brooklyn” and is now touring. Meanwhile, Chelsea is gearing up for the Critics Choice Awards, set to launch her new book “I’ll Have What She’s Having”, preparing for upcoming shows at her Las Vegas residency, and, as reported by Parade, venturing into acting this year.
She expressed to the source, “My life surpasses my expectations – it’s even better than I ever dreamed.” She added, “I didn’t realize just how much more there was to life or that I could experience such freedom as I do now.
