Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone Developers Talk About First-Person Mode and Story in New Trailer

Following its triumphant Kickstarter campaign, developer Farm 51 has unveiled a fresh trailer for the upcoming RPG titled “Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone“. The trailer offers a glimpse of the game’s recently added third-person perspective mode, along with the newly created first-person perspective mode. Take a look at it below.

The video additionally showcases creative director and art director Wojciech Pazdur, along with several other contributors from the game’s production crew. Later on, they express their gratitude to the game’s community for successfully funding the project within the initial three days of the Kickstarter campaign.

In the video, Pazdur expressed his excitement that our campaign was fully funded in only three days, adding, “It’s amazing to have such widespread support!” He also extended a heartfelt thank you on behalf of the whole team.

In the following scene, we get a sneak peek at the upcoming first-person perspective feature being designed for the game “Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone”. Additionally, the trailer offers a preview of various environments within the game where players will have the opportunity to venture.

In the video, narrative designer Sonia Furgalska steps into the spotlight to delve into the storyline of Chernobylite 2: The Exclusion Zone. During her discussion, she highlights the three principal characters in the game: Cole Grey, the enigmatic Chernobylite, and the Exclusion Zone itself.

According to Furgalska, the main characters in our game are as follows: Our leading character is Cole Grey, who used to be a mercenary and carries a troubled past. He finds himself stuck in Zona following an incident involving interdimensional chaos.

Chernobylite, the second one, is an interdimensional entity, appearing as a large, crystalized green substance. It’s not only the most radioactive element in the cosmos but also a cunning, ominous power that aims to dominate every planet across the universe.

According to Furgalska, the third main character in the tale is the Exclusion Zone itself. This is a realm where one misstep could be fatal, yet it’s also a place where you can discover all the resources required for your path towards freedom.

Artur Kosma, both a programmer and animator at Leag Studios, subsequently steps into the spotlight to discuss the upcoming game’s introduction of first-person mode, along with the rationale behind the studio’s decision to initially conceptualize combat in third-person perspective. The game was originally conceived as a third-person title, primarily to provide players with diverse tactics when engaging enemies, rather than solely arming them with guns. Adopting a third-person viewpoint would be advantageous for aspects such as melee combat, for instance.

Kosma explains that they aimed to expand gameplay choices and allow for unique character and narrative creation. To achieve this, they implemented a comprehensive character development system and numerous options for battling opponents. Not limiting themselves to just firearms in combat, they also incorporated non-lethal weapons and various forms of Chernobylite energy devices, striving to provide players with an optimal experience by exploring diverse solutions in these areas.

Despite initial reactions suggesting that a first-person perspective seemed more intuitive upon viewing the game’s trailers, removing this playstyle option could potentially diminish the overall gaming experience for many players.

Artur Fojcik, our game director, elaborated on the complexities involved in incorporating a first-person camera perspective into the game. It wasn’t as simple as adjusting the camera’s placement within the game engine.

In simpler terms, Fojcik explains that incorporating first-person combat in Chernobylite 2 will necessitate substantial adjustments to the current animation system, user interface, balance of difficulty, and camera work. Moreover, they plan to create distinctive animations for each of the numerous weapons and their accessories.

As a thrilled admirer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the arrival of “Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone”. A tantalizing trailer unveiled in October offered a sneak peek at its captivating gameplay and formidable adversaries. Though there’s no definitive release date as yet, it’s expected to grace both PC and gaming consoles later this year.
