Chicago Med Season 10 Finale Sparks Fears Caitlin Lenox’s Story Will End Soon

Although Chicago Med introduced a new character at the beginning of Season 10, there are signs that one of the newest characters might be on their way out by the end. The finale of Chicago Med Season 10 is packed with unexpected developments, many of which have little connection to the advertised hostage crisis. With Asher’s (Jessy Schram) pregnancy and Washington’s (John Earl Jelks) departure after his breakup with Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), Chicago Med Season 11 is shaping up to bring significant changes to the usual order at Gaffney.

Regrettably, significant shifts in the current situation frequently bring about farewells. Just as with some of the most emotional character departures from One Chicago, Gaffney’s medical staff rarely walk away from Chicago Med following positive developments. For instance, Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) parted ways due to family tragedies, Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) left because Charles (Oliver Platt) came close to letting her father – a serial killer – die, Sully (Daniel Dorr) passed offscreen from a blood clot shortly after Lenox (Sarah Ramos) agreed to postpone his return to prison. Now, it seems that one of Gaffney’s newer staff members may also be preparing to exit under similar heart-wrenching circumstances.

Caitlin Lenox Tests Positive For GSS Prion Disease In The Chicago Med Season 10 Finale

Kip Still Has No Idea What His Sister Is Going Through Alone

Information about Caitlin’s mother’s death unfolded slowly throughout the series Chicago Med, and it was eventually disclosed that she had succumbed to a challenging battle with prion disease, specifically Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease (GSS), an uncommon condition with no known cure. Following an alarming incident involving her brother Kip (Logan Miller) that necessitated testing for both of them, Caitlin chose to conceal the truth about her positive test results from her brother in order to alleviate his concerns about her health. At present, she intends to carry on working for as long as possible, feigning normalcy.

The speculation about Sarah Ramos departing from Chicago Med, portraying Caitlin Lenox, has sparked diverse reactions among viewers. At first, many fans found Lenox’s dominant personality and supposed God complex off-putting. These criticisms were openly expressed by Dean Archer (played by Steven Weber), a character disliked by fans until around season 6. However, as Lenox gradually shed parts of her hard exterior, some viewers have grown fond of the character, who is now widely regarded as one of the show’s top performers. Regrettably, her diagnosis leaves little scope for further development in her character arc.

Lenox Can’t Realistically Continue At Gaffney Long After Chicago Med Season 11

She Could Be Prevented From Working In As Little As A Few Months

It’s highly unlikely that Caitlin will disappear (AWOL) prior to the premiere of Chicago Med season 11. However, it remains uncertain how long she can maintain her plan to cope with her grief. While some patients may not show signs until they are 50 and could live for 15 years, the average lifespan after a diagnosis of Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker (GSS) syndrome is just five years, with symptoms sometimes appearing as early as age 35. Given that Ramos is currently 34, it’s possible that Lenox may not have much time left before her neurodegenerative symptoms hinder her ability to perform surgery.

Although Sarah Reese departed from Chicago Med earlier, Rachel DiPillo reprised her role as Sarah in season 10, reuniting with Charles. However, the symptoms of GSS display similarities with other severe conditions like ALS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. If Lenox lives for a complete 15 years, it may not feel like she is the same character once her symptoms manifest. Given that she can no longer manage the emergency floor, it seems challenging to envision how she would continue in the series.

How Caitlin’s Diagnosis Could Affect Her Chicago Med Season 11 Story

Lenox Can’t Keep Her GSS A Secret Forever

Despite being potentially unable to work past Season 11, Caitlin Lenox may still make appearances on the show. She could receive visits from characters such as Naomi (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut), Mitch (Luke Mitchell), Sharon, or even Dean. The exact timeframe for when her symptoms start is one of the main mysteries left by Chicago Med Season 10. However, it’s crucial that Chicago Med Season 11 tackles the issue of Caitlin concealing her diagnosis from Kip, as he might discover this truth in a difficult and painful manner.

If Caitlin is committed to concealing her illness, it’s likely that Kip will learn the truth when she exhibits signs of neurodegeneration. However, there’s a possibility that the most subtle symptoms may not appear until towards the end of Chicago Med‘s 11th season. It’s crucial to note that the phrase “after diagnosis” carries importance here. Many people are diagnosed after they display symptoms, but Lenox had different motivations for undergoing testing. Fingers crossed, this suggests she might have a bit more time.
