Chicago PD Revives Iconic Burgess & Atwater Duo in Season 12 Episode 19—Still Fire!

WARNING! SPOILERS ahead for Chicago PD season 12, episode 19, “Name Image Likeness.”

In the 19th episode of season 12, entitled “Name Image Likeness,” Chicago PD revives an established partnership from its early seasons, one that remains robust. The plot revolves around Sergeant Hank Voight’s team in Chicago PD trying to establish whether a renowned basketball player is guilty of murder. This gripping tale introduces newcomer Kiana Cook (portrayed by Toya Turner) to the challenging world of working with confidential informants, or CIs.

In the storyline of Chicago PD season 12, while the narrative primarily revolves around Cook, every character contributes to the ongoing investigation. The plot thickens when the confidential informant deceives the police, leading to a significant portion of the episode being spent on attempting to persuade her to cooperate. It’s important to note that Cook isn’t the only one working with this informant. For the first time in a while, two other characters combine efforts to secure the woman’s cooperation.

Chicago PD Season 12, Episode Sees Burgess & Atwater Go In The Field

They Make Initial Contact With Ruby, The CI Who Causes All The Trouble

For the first time, Atwater and Burgess meet Ruby when they knock on her grandmother’s door. Ruby dismisses her grandmother to speak briefly with the police officers, but shows no interest in conversing with them. Instead, she suggests they visit her at the strip club and compensate her for their conversation if they wish to continue. Although this interaction doesn’t progress things significantly, it is a crucial scene — it not only presents Ruby, but moreover reunites Atwater and Burgess as partners on duty.

In Chicago PD’s first season, Atwater and Burgess were teammates as patrol officers. However, Atwater received a promotion at the end of that season, while Burgess moved to Intelligence during season 4. Consequently, they haven’t had many chances to work together in more recent seasons of the long-running series. It was exciting for them to get back into the field together in “Name Image Likeness.

Why Burgess Is Best Teamed Up With Atwater Than Anyone Else

She Feels Less Pressure With Him Than With Other People

Burgess finds Atwater less stressful compared to others. She gels effectively with Ruzek, but there remains some tension due to their personal bond, along with concerns about his wellbeing. Additionally, there’s a potential for work disagreements escalating into domestic disputes. This dynamic contrasts with her interactions with Cook or Torres, as both relationships come with their own challenges.

Kiana Cook is the latest member of Chicago PD’s team, but it’s important to note that Burgess holds a higher rank than her. As a result, when Burgess collaborates with Cook or Torres, she effectively takes on the role of the boss in those situations, which can be quite demanding for her. On the other hand, when Chicago PD pairs up Burgess and Atwater, there’s no added pressure because they have a strong friendship built on mutual understanding and respect, without any intimate relationship. This friendly partnership makes their teamwork more entertaining to watch.
