The beloved Sanrio character Hello Kitty, known for her adorable charm, doesn’t have many competitors in the world of cuteness. One notable exception is the widely-loved manga series “Chiikawa,” which boasts a massive fanbase, particularly in its native land. Exciting news for these fans, Uniqlo has announced a new collection of UT graphic tees showcasing the main character and other designs by official author and artist Nagano.
This new collection will consist of eight unique designs, with four designs each for women’s and children’s t-shirts. The designs showcase Chiikawa, Kuma, and their friends, as depicted in Nagano’s charming and uncomplicated art style. Each design captures the characters engaging in daily activities, reflecting the essence of “Chiikawa,” whose full name means “Something Small and Cute.”
The collection is set to launch in Japan on June 23rd, and in the U.S. on August 4th. In the U.S., the women’s tees will be priced at $24.90, while children’s t-shirts will cost $14.90. Interestingly, only one design is shared between the two groups, but it comes in different color options for each. You can find official images of the designs below.

The women’s collection offers several designs:
1. A white T-shirt displaying the Chiikawa x Joke Bear and Friends characters in a lineup across the chest.
2. A shirt featuring Nagano no Kuma going shopping, with a small image of Kuma on the left front, while the back showcases a larger picture of Kuma browsing a bustling market.
3. A blue T-shirt, with Chiikawa, Usagi, and Hachiware depicted on the front along with the series title, “Nanka Chiisakute Kawaiiyatsu“. Each character’s weapon is also shown.
4. Lastly, a gray tee that illustrates a struggling Chiikawa on the front after consuming a spicy curry; the reverse side features Usagi and Hachiware in a similar predicament due to the ‘Oni Spicy Taste Uma Curry’.
For children, there are four options:
1. A variant of the women’s tee featuring Chiikawa, Usagi, and Hachiware, along with the series title, available also on a simple white background, aside from the other choices.
2. A light green shirt, displaying collaboration characters in the front design, accompanied by various food items.
3. A light purple shirt, depicting Kuma DJing on the front and ‘Dance’ written at the back, with Kuma’s friends seen dancing behind him.
4. Lastly, a gray T-shirt for kids, with Momonga on the left side of the front and a chalk-style illustration of Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi on the back.
Typically, Uniqlo offers their women’s shirts in several sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, and these specific sizes – XS, XXL, and 3XL – are only accessible through the online store. For children, the tees come in sizes from 100 to 160, with the 100 size exclusively available online. Each shirt is made entirely of cotton. Furthermore, Uniqlo is hosting a special promotion at their UNIQLO FLOWER stores where customers purchasing an eligible houseplant (either in-store or online) will receive a Chiikawa x Joke Bear garden pick while supplies last.
As an observer, I’ve noticed that Chiikawa, one of Nagano’s web serials, stands out particularly, as it has been compiled into tankobon manga volumes by Kodansha and even adapted into an anime series by the same name. This anime, known as “Chiikawa,” began airing in 2022 and has consistently delivered short episodes, amassing a total of 254 episodes so far. It was announced in March that the show would take a three-month hiatus before resuming in July. Unfortunately, not all episodes are available for streaming with English subtitles, but the initial 120 can be found on HIDIVE.
