It seems that filming for “Children of Blood and Bone” has started! Just recently, author Tomi Adeyemi posted a photo on Instagram showing a director’s chair with the title embroidered on the back, hinting at the location being a hair and makeup station on set. This suggests that production is indeed moving forward. Last month, the highly anticipated young adult fantasy adaptation made some significant casting announcements, and it appears these stars have jumped right into their roles. Adeyemi tagged the post as coming from Orisha – the fictional kingdom where the story takes place – and captioned it “and… action.” It looks like we can expect updates directly from the author’s social media platform.
After a lengthy and laborious journey, “Children of Blood and Bone” finally makes its way to the big screen, which is entirely fitting given Adeyemi’s palpable excitement. The book was initially published in 2018, but the rights for film adaptation were secured even before it went on sale. Originally, Fox 2000 Pictures acquired the rights, but unfortunately, that studio was closed down by its parent company, 21st Century Fox, following their acquisition by Disney.
The transition placed “Children of Blood and Bone” under Lucasfilm’s jurisdiction, yet this studio typically isn’t associated with original works like this, leading to a prolonged inactivity period. Reportedly, Adeyemi expressed her discontent, inquiring if she could draft the script to spark progress. However, her request was declined, and by the close of 2021, the film rights expired.
2022 saw the rights to these projects acquired by Paramount Pictures, with progress being made ever since. Adeyemi wrote the script herself as requested, while Gina Prince-Bythewood will be in charge of directing. The impressive lineup of actors includes Thuso Mbedu, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Tosin Cole, Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lashana Lynch, Idris Elba, and Viola Davis.
Despite the annoyance caused by these delays, they provided Adeyemi with ample opportunity to complete and release the entire “Legacy of Orïsha” series without interruption – a luxury not always afforded to some top-tier fantasy adaptations. The trilogy, which ended with “Children of Anguish and Anarchy” last year, is now finished. This frees Adeyemi up entirely to focus on her work as a writer and executive producer for this movie. Moreover, she appears to be our primary source for updates on social media regarding the project’s progress.
Currently, “The Legacy of Orïsha” series can be found in three different versions: print, digital, and audiobook editions. As for the movie adaptation of “Children of Blood and Bone“, filming is underway, but a release date has yet to be announced.
