As a film critic with a decade-long career under my belt, I can confidently say that Chris Evans’ performance in Knives Out is nothing short of remarkable. Having followed his journey from the humble beginnings of Johnny Storm to the mighty Captain America, it’s refreshing to see him take on such a drastically different role.
Chris Evans, renowned for his portrayal of Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has a movie that received exceptional praise from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and surprisingly, it’s not part of the Marvel franchise. The critically acclaimed film, “Knives Out,” directed by Rian Johnson, garnered almost unanimous admiration when it debuted in 2019, boasting a remarkable 97% score on the aggregator. While some of Evans’ Marvel films were highly appreciated by critics – like “Avengers: Endgame” (94%) and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (90%) – “Knives Out” outshines these in terms of critical acclaim within his entire filmography.
It’s noteworthy that the documentary “Superpower Dogs,” which Evans narrates, received a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on just seven reviews. In comparison, “Knives Out” boasts an impressive 471 reviews on the site, making its high rating all the more remarkable. Remarkably, “Knives Out,” the critically-acclaimed whodunnit, outshone Bong Joon-ho’s “Snowpiercer” (94%) in terms of critical acclaim.
In the movie “Knives Out”, Daniel Craig takes on the role of Benoit Blanc, a well-known detective who delves into the perplexing demise of famous author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), who happened to die during his birthday celebration with numerous family members. Given this setting, Blanc suspects several relatives, including Harlan’s haughty and self-entitled grandson Ransom Drysdale, played by Evans. This part represented a significant shift for Evans, who was previously known for his portrayal of the selfless Captain America in Marvel films. The audience embraced Evans’ transformation, even adopting the distinctive sweater that Ransom sports in the film as a popular symbol.

Beyond the glowing praise I’ve received, “Knives Out” truly shone at the box office, raking in an impressive $312.8 million worldwide on a budget of just $40 million. This film wasn’t just a financial success, but also earned a multitude of accolades during awards season. I was fortunate enough to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay, and the American Film Institute even included “Knives Out” in their list of best films for 2019. At the Golden Globes, it was recognized in several categories, including a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and both Craig and Ana de Armas received acting nods. This recognition set the stage for “Knives Out” to become a franchise, with Netflix emerging victorious in a bidding war for not one but two sequels. The first of these, titled “Glass Onion”, was released in 2022 and garnered similar acclaim. Unfortunately, I didn’t return for this installment, as the focus shifted to Blanc solving a fresh mystery with an entirely new cast of characters.
It appears that Evans had a great time working on “Knives Out”, as indicated by his anecdotes about sharing laughs with co-star Michael Shannon during filming and his proposal for a spinoff focusing on the character Ransom. However, whether we’ll see Evans reprise his role in future Knives Out installments is uncertain. He is not part of the cast for the upcoming “Wake Up Dead Man” (2025), and it remains to be seen if the franchise will continue beyond that point. Given that Johnson seems committed to the anthology format, with a rotating supporting cast including Daniel Craig, Ransom could very well be a one-time character.
In the upcoming film “Red One”, audiences will find Evans teaming up with Dwayne Johnson. This action-comedy revolves around a daring mission to save a kidnapped Santa Claus, played by J.K. Simmons. As for the Knives Out series, as of now, there’s no confirmed release date for “Wake Up Dead Man”. However, Craig is optimistic that it will have a prolonged theater run before streaming on Netflix.
