As a movie reviewer who has been following the MCU since its inception, I can confidently say that Chris Evans’ return as Captain America in “Avengers: Doomsday” is a move that, while exciting for some fans, could potentially undermine the emotional weight and significance of Steve Rogers’ ending.
In summary, Chris Evans first appeared as Captain America in “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011) and went on to play the role in 10 more films, concluding with “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). At the end of “Endgame”, Steve Rogers travels back in time, lives out his days with Peggy Carter, then returns as an old man. The series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney+ suggests that Steve may have died off-screen, effectively ending his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) journey. However, rumors persist about Evans’s potential return to the MCU in 2026’s “Avengers: Doomsday”, leaving fans curious as to whether he will reprise the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America, which could potentially weaken the impact of his character’s ending if Marvel Studios decides to bring him back.
In the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Avengers: Doomsday,” there’s speculation that Chris Evans, who previously played Johnny Storm (a.k.a. Human Torch) in the Fox universe’s “Deadpool and Wolverine” this year, might reappear as Captain America. However, the specifics of his role remain a mystery at this time. While the thought of Evans donning the star-spangled suit once more might thrill some Marvel aficionados, it could potentially disrupt the MCU’s next major storyline.
Why Chris Evans Returning as Captain America Is a Bad Idea
Following his command of the Avengers in the climactic battle versus Thanos, Steve decides to make amends for missed moments by reconnecting with his cherished partner, who he tragically watched perish while remaining timelessly young himself. Steve encounters an immense hurdle adjusting to contemporary life after being trapped in a time freeze against his wishes for so long. It was rewarding for the character to lastly have control over his destiny, albeit in the past. However, if Marvel Studios were to resurrect Steve Rogers within the MCU — even as an alternate version — such a move would undermine the poignant conclusion of this beloved hero’s storyline. At this juncture, it seems most appropriate to conclude Steve’s narrative as it stands.
Furthermore, it’s been announced that Anthony Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson (who will star in his own movie, “Captain America: Brave New World,” set for release in February), has taken over as Captain America. Although it’s not yet certain if Mackie will appear in “Avengers: Doomsday,” the plot suggests he’ll play a significant role in the team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they face off against Doctor Doom (portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.). This could potentially overshadow Chris Evans’ previous portrayal of Captain America, given that Sam has been building up to this role over many years and even received the symbolic torch from him.
Chris Evans Should Play a Different Character in Avengers: Doomsday to Keep Steve Rogers’ Legacy Intact
In the movie Deadpool and Wolverine, Evans’s portrayal of the Human Torch was a pleasant surprise since he hadn’t played that role for almost twenty years. If Evans were to reprise his role as Johnny Storm in Avengers: Doomsday, it could be beneficial to both the movie and the MCU. This is because it would preserve Steve Rogers’s legacy and offer a distinct contrast to the current MCU’s version of Johnny Storm, who will be played by Joseph Quinn in next year’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps and reappear in Doomsday as well as Avengers: Secret Wars. If a dual Human Torch isn’t possible (which seems unlikely after Cassandra Nova’s actions), Evans could astonish audiences by taking on an entirely new character within the MCU. This move would allow the film to introduce more beloved comic book characters without relying too heavily on the past.
It’s crucial for Marvel Studios to grasp the significance of keeping deceased characters deceased, even considering the multiverse. The emotional goodbyes in movies like Endgame, such as Steve’s and Tony Stark’s, served as powerful conclusions to their character arcs while paving the way for the new generation of heroes. Over-reliance on past stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans might dilute the quality of upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday, especially if they overindulge in fan nostalgia. Instead, the Marvel Cinematic Universe should allow its current stars, such as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, to shine brightly and lead the way for future films.
