Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus Is the Year’s Best Villain (Golden Issue Awards 2024)

As a film critic who’s spent decades navigating the cinematic landscape, I must say that 2024 was a year rich with villainous characters that left audiences cowering in their seats. From the ruthless Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen to the chilling Johnny, each antagonist brought a unique brand of terror and intrigue. But it was Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga that truly stole the show.

2024 saw an array of remarkable heroes captivate moviegoers with their bravery and optimism throughout the year. However, it’s worth noting that the appeal of these heroes often lies in the villains they confront and the harrowing ordeals they inflict upon a main character. This led to viewers experiencing a wide variety of chaos and grotesque scenes. Some of these antagonists embodied relentless cruelty, while others had motives that resonated with the audience, and yet others were a blend of both. Over the course of 2024, viewers not only cheered for their favorite characters but also found themselves rooting against some new ones.

Characters such as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen from “Dune: Part Two” and Johnny from “In a Violent Nature” embodied the essence of villainy, leaving little unscathed in their destructive path. Proximus Caesar, hailing from “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” had goals that appeared honorable but his tactics were often questionable, bordering on terrifying. The team-up of Deadpool and Wolverine brought together two of Marvel’s most famous characters, leading them to focus on Cassandra Nova, who posed a threat to the very structure of reality. Dementus from “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” was a common apocalyptic warlord, consistently shocking both viewers and on-screen characters with his malevolence. However, only one antagonist could rise above the rest as the Best Villain of 2024.

And the winner of the 2024 ComicBook Golden Issue Award for Best Villain is…

Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga!

In “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the character Immortan Joe stood out as one of the most memorable villains from the past ten years. Given the series’ history of creating fearsome antagonists, it speaks volumes about director George Miller and actor Hugh Keays-Byrne that they managed to surpass all previous portrayals. With such a high standard set, viewers were curious about how Chris Hemsworth’s character Dementus would measure up. To everyone’s surprise, Hemsworth demonstrated that he was indeed mentally unstable enough for the role, proving his versatility as an actor.

In Fury Road, Immortan Joe was a dominant warlord who typically preferred his brutal actions to do the talking, but with Dementus, viewers were introduced to a rapid-fire tyrant whose verbal arsenal matched his inventiveness in torment. Interestingly, it was how Dementus could effortlessly transition from appearing as a friendly, jovial, and even humorous character into a merciless one that made him so captivating for audiences to behold.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at Chris Hemsworth’s transformative journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he brought Thor to life. He was undeniably engaging and had an undeniable chemistry with his co-stars. However, it was in 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok” where audiences truly tasted his full talent, as the film masterfully combined his rugged stoicism with an unexpected, yet hilarious wit.
