“Who here’s ready for some wrasslin’?”
The trailer for the chilling new wrestling horror movie titled “Dark Match” has been unveiled by Shudder. This spine-tingling production features AEW wrestler Chris Jericho in the cast. The story revolves around a struggling wrestling group that agrees to perform in a shady town, deep in the woods. As per the plot summary, they take this job in the hope of a substantial payday, but soon discover, to their horror, that the town is ruled by a secretive cult leader who harbors sinister intentions for their wrestling match.
It seems that Jericho is portraying a figure akin to a cult leader, using wrestling matches as analogous to “sacrifices.” In the trailer, he mentions “five children” and “five matches,” hinting at five separate offerings or contests. The narrative appears to be building up towards something significant.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d say that “Dark Match” was masterfully crafted by the talented Lowell Dean, who took charge as both writer and director. The production team, consisting of John K. MacDonald, Don Depoe, Michael Feehan, Rhonda Baker, and Michael Peterson, ensured a seamless and engaging cinematic experience. Eleanor Wiebe and Chris Jericho served as the executive producers for this gripping project. An exceptional cast, including Ayisha Issa, Steven Ogg, Sara Canning, Michael Eklund, and Jonathan Chery, alongside Chris Jericho, brought the story to life.
Over the past few years, professional wrestling has become increasingly popular in popular culture. For example, STARZ produced a series called “Heels,” starring Alexander Ludwig, Stephen Amell, Kelli Berglund, and WWE’s CM Punk. Additionally, A24 released “The Iron Claw” which explores the tragic history of the legendary Von Erich family. Lastly, Netflix premiered its controversial docuseries on Mr. McMahon.
Coming up next is “Queen of the Ring,” a movie that delves into the career of legendary female wrestler, Mildred Burke (Emily Bett Rickards). Notable women wrestlers take center stage in this film, set to hit cinemas this March.
Next up, we have “Queen of the Ring,” a movie focusing on the life and career of one of women’s wrestling’s biggest stars, Mildred Burke (Emily Bett Rickards). A number of popular female wrestlers play pivotal roles in this film that debuts in theaters in March.
Meanwhile, wrestling is flourishing in popular culture as it secures significant streaming agreements with two prominent platforms – Netflix and Max. Notably, WWE’s substantial $5 billion deal with Netflix encompasses shows like “WWE Raw” and other content, while Max emerges as the primary platform for AEW Dynamite, which will also be broadcast simultaneously on TBS.
This development has opened up opportunities for wrestlers to appear in more movies, with Jericho featuring in the third part of the Terrifier series and former AEW champion MJF sharing the screen with Hollywood icon Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2.
Becky Lynch, a WWE star, has taken a break over the last few months, partly because of her desire to pursue acting. She’s announced that she’ll appear in an upcoming “Star Trek” project on Paramount+ and rumors suggest she might also feature in the new “Happy Gilmore” movie sequel.
Dark Match streams exclusively on Shudder on January 31st.
