Christian Bale highly cherishes one movie, and starting from the 1st of June, “Beverly Hills Ninja” will find its new abode on Hulu.
The 1997 martial arts movie, known as a slapstick comedy, features Chris Farley, Nicollette Sheridan, Nathaniel Parker, Robin Shou, and others. This film narrates the tale of Haru (Farley), who was adopted by ninjas as an infant found in a treasure chest. When Haru’s initial mission leads him to Beverly Hills for a murder mystery, all sorts of mayhem unfolds. Bale has expressed that this movie is his favorite, even confessing that he couldn’t help but laugh uproariously upon viewing it.
During its debut weekend, the movie titled “Beverly Hills Ninja” was the highest-grossing film in North America, raking in more than $37 million globally. However, the film received mostly unfavorable feedback from both critics and viewers, who felt it lacked the charm that Bale appears to possess. On Rotten Tomatoes, “Beverly Hills Ninja” has a 16% approval rating among reviewers, while a slightly higher 53% of over 250,000 viewers found the film entertaining.
Although some viewers felt the film leaned too much on Farley’s physical humor, others appreciated its comedy due to how well he played his character. Renowned for his physical comedy skits as a cast member on NBC’s, Farley was also known for his roles in movies like “Airheads,” “Black Sheep,” and “Almost Heroes.” Sadly, he passed away at the age of 33 due to a drug overdose in 1997. The film “Beverly Hills Ninja” was one of Farley’s final films released during his lifetime.
Bale Praised Farley’s Performance in Beverly Hills Ninja
Known for his intense, dramatic roles, Christian Bale surprisingly admired the slapstick comedy “Beverly Hills Ninja.” He praised Chris Farley’s performance in the film, stating that it was one of the main reasons he found the movie so amusing. When asked why he chose “Beverly Hills Ninja” as his favorite, Bale explained, “Chris Farley was fantastic. I’ve enjoyed other films, but I watched this one two nights in a row and laughed until I cried both times, so I decided to mention it.
Although Bale hasn’t taken on comedic roles akin to Farley, he’s quite familiar with comedy. He received an Academy Award nomination for his performance in David O. Russell’s dark comedy “American Hustle”. Moreover, he portrayed the humorous supervillain Gorr the God Butcher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s more playful settings.
Beverly Hills Ninja will be streaming on Hulu beginning June 1.
