The former star of “Married…With Children” has been candid about her health journey following her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021, and she recently talked about a surgery she underwent at a young age.
In her podcast “MeSsy” on July 30, she shared with co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler that at the age of 27, I was featured on a show. One of the producers, who were well-known for producing a popular series, remarked, “We’re having difficulties with the lighting under your eyes. Your eye bags are extremely prominent.”
Christina pointed out that her under-eye bags were something she inherited, adding a joke by saying her father’s eyes looked like luxury Louis Vuitton suitcases.
Even after the producer advised her to have under-eye bags reduced, Christina agreed, confessing later that it went against her initial instincts at the moment.
When she was 27 years old, she underwent a single plastic surgery procedure, which was aimed at getting rid of the bags beneath her eyes.
She continued, “The things people just plant, these seeds they plant into your head.”
The star of “Anchorman” has consistently been open about her health, and she doesn’t shy away from addressing those who speculate about plastic surgery due to the changes in her appearance that are part of her Multiple Sclerosis experience.
In my recent post on platform X (previously known as Twitter), I shared an experience from early January where I regretfully read comments about me and my children in an article from People magazine at the CCA. One comment, unfortunately, was particularly harsh. I felt compelled to address it, so I told her that her remark wasn’t appropriate. Here’s her response. Honestly, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the situation. But I can’t help but wonder what could be causing such behavior from people. By the way, I had a good laugh about it.
The 52-year-old has also talked about how her diagnosis has affected her mental health, recently saying that she’s struggling with depression due to the physical effects of the disease.
On the MeSsy podcast in June, she shared that she’s been experiencing deep sadness, something she hasn’t felt for years. This isn’t just the blues; it’s a heavy, all-encompassing sadness that feels quite daunting and even a bit terrifying because of its fatalistic nature.
Christina, who has a 13-year-old daughter named Sadie Grace with her husband Martyn LeNoble, admitted that she too was growing weary of the negative emotions stemming from her health condition.
She astonishedly remarked, “It’s hard to believe that it’s already been three years since my diagnosis in June. Yet here I am, feeling sorry for myself and being angry about it.”

As a person who has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), I can attest to the fact that this journey has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions and challenges. However, I am incredibly grateful for the support and understanding I’ve received from others who are also living with this condition. It’s been a tough road, but as they say, life goes on. One thing is for sure: I will continue to navigate this journey with determination and resilience, even if some obstacles try to block my path ahead.
During her induction at the Hollywood Walk of Fame in November 2022, her first public outing since being diagnosed with a disease, she playfully commented: “You didn’t miss it, did you? I’m not wearing any shoes to subtly hint about my health situation.”
Christina believes her MS journey actually began “six or seven years” before her 2021 diagnosis.
During an interview on Good Morning America in March 2024, Christina shared her experience working on Dead to Me. She mentioned that while filming, especially during the first season, her leg would unexpectedly give way. At first, she attributed it to being tired, dehydrated, or the weather. However, for months afterward, nothing else seemed amiss and she didn’t give it much thought.
By the time she filmed the third and last season of the Netflix series, the actress mentioned that she was being transported to set in a wheelchair.
“I couldn’t move that far,” she recalled, “so I had to tell everybody because I needed help.”
As a die-hard enthusiast, I’m always eager for updates from the brilliant star of Dead to Me. Recently, she shared a heartfelt snapshot of her walking stick collection, a testament to her courageous journey with MS. In her own words, “Walking sticks are now an integral part of my everyday life.”
Accompanied by her daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble, Christina delivered a straightforward message regarding Multiple Sclerosis at the 2023 SAG Awards: “MS, I give you the finger.”
Following a hearty standing ovation at the 2023 Emmys, the former star of “Married…With Children” humorously remarked, “Your applause is making me feel incredibly inadequate due to my ability status.”
Christina expressed on the March 2024 episode of Armchair Expert that she tells jokes about herself due to a need for release, stating, “If I don’t joke about it, I might as well drown.” In simpler terms, she humorously copes with her situation by making light of it.
She mentioned during the podcast that she has thirty spots or abnormalities in her brain. The largest of these is located at the back of her right eye, which causes her considerable pain in that eye.
According to the Multiple Sclerosis Trust, multiple sclerosis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering (myelin sheath) surrounding nerve fibers.
Christina hasn’t held back when it comes to sharing her journey.
The Anchorman actress expressed her hardships to late-night host Jimmy Kimmel due to her daily battles with Multiple Sclerosis, stating bluntly, “It’s not great.” She added honestly, “I don’t think someone with MS would say this is the best thing that ever happened to them.”
In my conversation with Good Morning America back in March 2024, I expressed that living with this illness feels like being trapped in a perpetual inferno – I refer to it as ‘my daily life in hell.’
She mentioned, “However, I might reach a point where I operate somewhat more efficiently,” she noted. “At the moment, I’m opting for solitude, which seems to be my approach towards coping—avoiding going out since I don’t feel up to it. It’s challenging.”
Christina acknowledged that her “Sweetest Thing” co-star, Selma Blair (diagnosed with MS in 2018), encouraged her to undergo testing for multiple sclerosis.
Reflecting on my recent interview with Good Morning America, I find myself reminiscing about a crucial piece of advice I received – ‘get tested for Multiple Sclerosis’. Hadn’t it been for that guidance, the consequences might have been far more severe.
In May 2023, Christina shared with Vanity Fair that it’s highly probable that “Dead to Me” will mark her final on-screen appearance. She expressed that she finds it difficult to envision herself returning to a filming set at this point.
She expressed that it’s unlikely she’ll work on-camera with another actor again, but she’s incredibly grateful for her experience working with Linda Cardellini, who she considers to be the most exceptional actress she’s ever collaborated with throughout her career – if not one of the greatest individuals she’s ever encountered.
