As a seasoned movie-goer who has seen more films than I care to count, and with a particular fondness for both video game adaptations and animated classics, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming box office showdown between “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa: The Lion King.
It’s predicted that “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” will outperform “Mufasa: The Lion King” at the box office when they both debut in December. Interestingly, they both release on December 20th, mere days before Christmas. As per The Hollywood Reporter, initial projections suggest that “Sonic 3” could earn approximately $55 million in its first three days domestically, while “Mufasa” is expected to trail closely with around $50 million.
The Sonic movie series launched in 2020, with the first film being one of the final significant productions before the outbreak of COVID-19. “Sonic the Hedgehog” was a box office sensation, earning $319.7 million globally on a budget of $85 million. The sequel, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” released in 2022, outperformed its predecessor, amassing a staggering $405.4 million worldwide. Paramount has been building anticipation for the third part, hinted at by trailers featuring Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog.
In simpler terms, “Mufasa” is a precursor film to the 2019 remake of “The Lion King,” which was an extraordinary hit. Jon Favreau’s movie earned over $1.6 billion worldwide and sits at number 10 on the all-time global box office charts. In the United States, “The Lion King” opened with a staggering $191.7 million, breaking records for July until this year when “Deadpool & Wolverine” debuted with $211.4 million in ticket sales.
Keep in mind that the box office predictions for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa,” which are set to release soon, are preliminary. These numbers could change significantly over the next few weeks as various factors come into play, such as audience reactions (word-of-mouth) and critical reviews. Since they’re family-friendly choices for the holiday season, their success with critics could significantly influence their box office performance. Additionally, they will be competing against established hits like “Moana 2” and “Wicked,” which are currently breaking records and enjoying successful runs. If these movies maintain their strong performances into late December, it may impact the earnings of “Sonic 3” and “Mufasa.
If the predictions are accurate, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 might open with lower earnings compared to its predecessors; the initial film made $58 million on its opening weekend, while Sonic 2 earned $72.1 million. Yet, this potential decrease in domestic earnings may not be a significant issue, considering the previous installments had strong international performances. As long as Sonic 3 doesn’t experience an unexpected downturn, it is likely to remain a financially successful venture for Paramount.
The Lion King franchise might experience a significant dip in comparison to other live-action Disney adaptations at the moment. The 2019 remake, despite being based on the much-loved 1994 animated original (often hailed as a classic), hasn’t received as much acclaim. This lower anticipation could be why it’s showing less promising early numbers. However, if director Barry Jenkins manages to create something extraordinary with the movie and surpass expectations, it could potentially become more successful than initially predicted.
