Christmas Day Showdown Ends With One Movie Claiming the Crown at the Box Office

As a seasoned cinephile who has been following the evolution of cinema since the days of black and white films, I must say that Christmas Day 2024 was a spectacle to behold at the box office. The diverse lineup of movies showcased the vibrant tapestry of storytelling we’ve come to expect in today’s cinematic landscape.

2024’s Christmas Day witnessed a variety of films competing fiercely at the box office. However, there could be just one ruler, and it was none other than Disney’s prequel film, Mufasa: The Lion King, that claimed the throne, grossing $14.7 million on Christmas. In second place, we find the much-awaited horror movie, Nosferatu, which made a powerful debut with $11.5 million on its opening day. At number 3 was Sonic 3, raking in $10.3 million for its video game trilogy movie. The Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unkown (starring Timothée Chalamet as the main character), took the fourth spot with a take of $7.2M, boosted by $1.4M from Christmas Eve previews. Lastly, Wicked rounded off the top 5 with $5.4M, demonstrating its impressive box office presence, having secured Top 5 spots during both Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays this year.

Winning the box office on Christmas Day for “Mufasa” is a significant achievement for Disney, as it outpaced the swift start of “Sonic 3” when both movies premiered close to Christmas (December 20th). However, the “The Lion King” prequel quickly caught up with “Sonic 3,” leading into the holiday season. With its victory on Christmas Day, “Mufasa” is projected to gross around $200 million worldwide in the following days, which matches its production budget. On the other hand, “Sonic 3” is aiming for $90 million, still falling short of its $155 million budget. It’s anticipated that both family-friendly films could maintain strong showings as Christmas moves towards New Year’s, indicating a promising holdover.

In a more casual tone, Although the original horror film, Nosferatu, had a budget within the typical range for such movies (around $40-$50 million), Focus Features/Universal views Robert Eggers’ remake as a potential award winner rather than a blockbuster. If the buzz among audiences is positive, Nosferatu might turn out to be both. Other films vying for awards this season include Babygirl (starring Nicole Kidman) and The Fire Inside (a biopic about boxer Claressa Shields), which opened with earnings of $1.5 million and $1.7 million respectively; Adrian Brody’s film, The Brutalist, made approximately $75,000 during its opening.

What Is Mufasa: The Lion King About?

Following a devastating flood that separates young lion Mufasa from his family, he’s rescued by another cub named Taka. As they grow up, their bond becomes strong, similar to brothers. However, in their later years, a band of treacherous lions endangers the entire pride, forcing Mufasa and Taka to flee together. Along the way, they meet new friends and face numerous perils, testing their loyalty towards each other. The question arises: who among them is meant to rule as the Lion King, but at what potential price?

In the cast of Mufasa, familiar faces return from the 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King. These actors include Donald Glover playing Simba, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, John Kani as Rafiki, and Beyoncé as Nala. Joining them are new additions to the cast: Aaron Pierre (known for Lanterns) as young Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as young Scar, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Mads Mikkelsen (of Doctor Strange fame) as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Lennie James as Obasi, and Blue Ivy making her feature film debut as Kiara.
