Christoph Waltz gained recognition and won an Oscar for his roles in Quentin Tarantino’s films, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained. Now, audiences can witness a different side of the actor in the action film Old Guy, where he plays Danny Dolinski, a veteran hitman who mentors a younger assassin. Interestingly, this movie also stars Lucy Liu, another Tarantino alum from Kill Bill, as Anata, who develops a romantic interest for Waltz’s character. The actors found it intriguing to delve into this dynamic on set.
Liu stated in an interview with ComicBook that she believes Danny and Anata’s relationship took her by surprise. When asked about it, she explained, “Initially, upon hearing about it from him following her perceived ‘happily ever after’ rejection, she feels startled, not as a victim but more out of resistance because she perceives he might be acting out of pity. She dislikes this situation because she’s already feeling defeated. However, over time, a bond develops between them that transforms in an unexpected way.
In this action-comedy, a seasoned assassin, played by Christoph Waltz, finds himself mentoring a promising newcomer, Cooper Hoffman, after his employer decides to phase out the older generation. However, when they uncover a betrayal, the two unexpected partners become a deadly duo, setting their sights on the ones who double-crossed them. Lucy Liu also stars in this film, directed by the maker of “Con Air” and “The Expendables 2”.
Although viewers might swiftly recognize a similarity with Tarantino’s work between Waltz and Liu, this wasn’t a prominent thought for the actors while they were filming.
Liu mentioned that working with Tarantino slipped his mind since the focus during their hotel meals together was on enjoying each other’s company rather than work. They didn’t discuss resumes or their collaboration initially as it seemed to emerge organically, but eventually, they did talk about it.
As a seasoned film critic, I must say that “Old Man” delves into the compelling idea that life’s rich tapestry of experiences often surpasses youthful exuberance in certain instances. Liu and Waltz brilliantly illustrate this concept through their remarkable acting careers, spanning decades.
Liu expressed that asking questions and receiving comprehensive answers can help individuals develop a stronger sense of self over time. He suggested that when we’re younger, we may be more inclined to do things without questioning them. However, as we grow older, we become more self-aware and confident in our decisions, often realizing what we were doing in past projects, he added. Liu concluded that this ability to understand oneself better is a valuable asset that comes with experience in the business world.
Waltz expressed, “I’ve been emphasizing that when you embark on a journey, you’re brimming with excitement. You dive headfirst into everything – and that’s as it should be, for the cautious ones may miss out on experiences. So, you must charge ahead with full force initially. Only then, if you strive to be truthful, will you uncover your flaws, limitations, and see how reality differs from your initial ideals. He went on to say, “And this is when the real beginning happens. It doesn’t start with enthusiasm; it starts when you have to find a way out of disappointment.
Old Guy debuts in select theaters and on digital February 21st.
