Actors Christopher Eccleston, Anna Friel, and Dame Emma Thompson have joined the cast for an upcoming film that tells the real-life tale of a transgender woman and her spouse who waged a court battle to legally recognize their marriage.
As I sat down to watch “Hear Me Roar,” I found myself captivated by the powerful portrayal of Elizabeth Bellinger, brilliantly played by Rebecca Root (known for her roles in “Heartstopper” and “Hogwarts Legacy). In this gripping tale, we follow Elizabeth, a trans woman, who embarked on an extraordinary journey when she tied the knot with Michael, superbly brought to life by David Tennant (or Eccleston, as some may know him), in a clandestine wedding held in the 1980s. This film is a poignant exploration of love, identity, and the courage it takes to live authentically.
Approximately twenty years after, the pair decided to make their relationship official and sought legal recognition from the government. Barrister Ashley Bayston, portrayed by Friel, was their representative during the court proceedings.
Bayston stays connected to the captivating tale, collaborating as a co-writer with Lisa McMullin on “Hear Me Roar,” joining forces also on Doctor Who’s “The Ninth Doctor Adventures” and “Death in Paradise.
In a highly significant case, Thompson will play the part of the judge alongside Julian Ovenden, who has previously acted in Bridgerton and Trigger Point, yet the specifics of his role are still unspecified.
Thompson expressed that the story was incredibly touching, powerful, and amusing, leaving him in tears like an infant. He found the tale and screenplay exceptional, filled with captivating characters – he was utterly captivated by it and felt a profound emotional impact.
“I think it’s both fascinating and profoundly meaningful and essential.”
Amy Coop, the director, noted, “It’s a honor to collaborate with such a fantastic group as we bring this remarkable tale to life. This lesser-known chapter of contemporary British history holds significant importance and marked a profound change for individuals identifying within the LGBTQ+ community.
Among the United Kingdom’s most active actresses who identify as transgender is Root, known for her roles in various productions such as Eddie Redmayne’s award-winning film “The Danish Girl,” BBC Two sitcom “Boy Meets Girl,” Sky’s supernatural drama series “The Rising,” and the popular Netflix show “The Queen’s Gambit.
Previously, Coop directed episodes for the CBBC series Silverpoint and the Northern Irish drama Hope Street. Additionally, she served as the second assistant director on notable productions such as Steven Knight’s A Thousand Blows, BBC One’s Ralph & Katie, and Netflix’s Feel Good.
Hear Me Roar does not yet have a release date.
