In the upcoming season, James Gunn’s modern portrayal of the iconic character Superman, played by David Corenswet, is set to debut in cinemas this summer. This fresh take offers fans a new DC Universe primarily centered around the Steel Man. It’s important to note that the last time we witnessed this superhero legend on the big screen was through Henry Cavill’s portrayal in Zack Snyder’s contentious DCEU trilogy. However, Cavill’s character only received a standalone movie dedicated entirely to his interpretation of Superman.
The 2013 film, “Man of Steel,” unfortunately faded into the background amidst the releases of “Batman v Superman” and later “Justice League,” with no immediate sequel to the original movie in sight. Interestingly, one director came extremely close to realizing a sequel.
In a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Chris McQuarrie touched upon his plans for Man of Steel 2. When probed for specifics about the plot, McQuarrie hinted at its excellence and his take on the character, stating emphatically, “I’ll never reveal it. I’ll never reveal it, but let me tell you, it was incredible. It was incredible.” Other directors, including Matthew Vaughn, briefly contemplated helming the project before the DC Universe eventually underwent a reboot.
During the filming of “Mission: Impossible—Fallout,” Henry Cavill established a collaborative relationship with McQuarrie. The actor advocated for McQuarrie to assume the role, as it was reported that McQuarrie had been offered a project based on “Green Lantern” at the same time. In 2019, McQuarrie had tweeted (and subsequently deleted) about his intentions to develop two movies: one featuring Superman and the other focusing on Green Lantern. However, these ideas were ultimately rejected by the studio due to their preference for saving existing projects over creating new ones at the time.
Christopher McQuarrie‘s ‘Superman’ Would’ve Been “Extraordinary” in Scale
Even though the project didn’t move forward, McQuarrie remains enthusiastic about potential films he envisioned. After the moderate reception of 2013’s Man of Steel, it was intriguing to imagine McQuarrie working with Cavill again on a film that delved deeper into the character, serving as a possible final attempt to revitalize the DCEU. However, McQuarrie later shared details about his opening scene concept on a podcast.
In my Superman film, I would’ve started with a silent, 5-minute opening scene that established the character deeply. Similar to Pixar’s Up, it would provide insight into what drives Superman, what scares him the most, and why he makes certain decisions. The impact would have been tremendous; the movie would have been nothing short of extraordinary in scale.
McQuarrie has shown his talent for crafting grand narratives with the three Mission: Impossible films he has directed to date, each one becoming more expansive. If given the chance, McQuarrie’s skill in action sequences could have made him an ideal choice for directing a Superman movie, potentially bringing out an intriguing portrayal from Cavill. Although this collaboration didn’t occur, let’s hope that they team up on another project someday, and Superman fans can anticipate the release of James Gunn’s film this summer.
