Cisco Unveils AI Defense Amidst Growing Fears of AI’s Threat to Humanity!

As an observer, I find myself reflecting on Cisco’s latest announcement about “AI Defense” in light of the pressing issues surrounding artificial intelligence: security, privacy, and the broader question of its potential impact on humanity. The thought that this technology could steer us towards our own demise is a concern that resonates widely, from tech enthusiasts to government officials.

Regrettably, the regulatory landscape for the development and application of generative AI has been scant at best. This leaves room for unforeseen incidents or misuse, significantly increasing the risk of AI veering off course.

As a concerned enthusiast, I’d like to highlight the perspective of Roman Yampolskiy, AI safety researcher and director of the Cyber Security Laboratory at the University of Louisville. He suggests that the potential for AI to bring about humanity’s doom is startlingly high, with a probability of 99.999999%. This statistic, often referred to as p(doom), underscores the need for caution in our pursuit of artificial intelligence. Remarkably, he posits that the only viable solution could be not to create AI at all. However, there appears to be a glimmer of hope on the horizon: Yampolskiy hints at the possibility of navigating these challenges and ensuring that AI’s development benefits rather than threatens humanity.

In simpler terms, AI Defense is an advanced safety measure specifically tailored for the creation and operation of artificial intelligence applications within businesses, ensuring that AI technology can be utilized in a secure manner.

In a special conversation with Rowan Cheung from The Rundown AI, Jeetu Patel – Cisco’s Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer – shared insights on the fast-paced evolution of artificial intelligence. Addressing growing security and protection issues, he announced the launch of AI Defense.

In the future, we’ll essentially have two categories of businesses: those that are at the forefront with AI technology and those that may become obsolete. Almost every company will be utilizing, if not creating, numerous AI applications due to the fast-paced advancements in AI. The speed of innovation in AI is outstripping major security issues and concerns.

We’ve created AI Defense as a means to secure both the creation and application of artificial intelligence technologies. Essentially, AI Defense serves to prevent the misapplication of AI tools, data breaches, and ever-evolving threats that traditional security measures may struggle with.

As an observer, I find it hard to overstate the significance of AI Defense in our current technological landscape. It seems to be the most immediate solution we have against the potential existential risks posed by artificial intelligence. However, what truly gives me pause is a finding from Cisco’s 2024 AI Readiness report: an alarmingly small proportion, just 29%, of those surveyed express confidence in their ability to detect and prevent unauthorized manipulation of AI systems.

It might stem from the novelty and intricacy of the artificial intelligence field. Furthermore, AI applications are versatile across various models and clouds, which increases their vulnerability to cyber threats as they can potentially be exposed during deployment at either the model or application level.

Will Cisco monitor AGI progress?

The timing for the rollout of our security solution couldn’t be more opportune, given the fierce competition among leading AI research institutions like Anthropic and OpenAI, who are all striving to reach the prestigious Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) milestone. Notably, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has stated that his team is capable of creating AGI, and they aim to achieve this benchmark ahead of schedule as they redirect their efforts towards superintelligence.

Despite worries about security and societal impact, Altman argued that the benchmark would pass with surprisingly minimal effects on society. He further stated that the concerns raised wouldn’t manifest during the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) stage. However, it has been suggested that the advancement of AI might have encountered a barrier due to the scarcity of top-tier content for model training. Leading figures in the industry, including Sam Altman and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, have contested these claims, stating there’s no proof that the pace of AI development has slowed down due to scaling issues. “There is no wall,” reiterated Altman.

AI Defense is an advancement moving us in a positive direction, but it’s uncertain whether it will become widespread among businesses and leading AI research facilities. Notably, the CEO of OpenAI admits the potential danger AI poses to humanity, yet he is optimistic that the technology itself will develop enough intelligence to avoid causing catastrophic harm.
