Cissy Houston – legendary singer and mother of Whitney Houston – dies, aged 91

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for music, Cissy Houston‘s life story resonates deeply with me. Her journey from the streets of Newark to the hallowed halls of gospel and pop stardom is nothing short of inspiring. Born into a family of musical prodigies, she found her calling in the divine harmonies of the church and the soulful melodies of the secular world.

It is with confirmation from her family that Cissy Houston, a Grammy award-winning singer, and mother to the renowned Whitney Houston, passed away at the age of 91.

On the 7th of October, Cissy – renowned for her collaborations with stars like Elvis Presley – passed away at her residence in New Jersey. She was under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease, as confirmed by her daughter-in-law, Pat Houston, to The Associated Press.

I’m deeply saddened, as we’ve lost the beloved matriarch of our family. My heart aches with this sorrowful realization.

“Mother Cissy has been an influential and powerful presence in our lives. She was a woman with strong faith and unwavering beliefs, who valued her family, her work in ministry, and her community deeply. Her seven-decade long journey in music and entertainment will continue to hold a special place in our hearts.

12 years after Whitney’s untimely demise at age 48 due to an unfortunate accidental drowning in a hotel bathtub back in 2012, Cissy passed away as well.

Emily Drinkard was born in 1933, in Newark, New Jersey. Known as Cissy, she embarked on a gospel music career with The Drinkard Four for many years. However, it was when she formed the Sweet Inspiration group along with her niece Dee Dee Warwick and Doris Troy that her rise to fame truly began.

The team provided backup vocals for a variety of prominent musicians such as Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Dusty Springfield, and Dionne (Cissy’s niece) among others.

Living such an extraordinary life, Cissy Houston, it’s now time for you to find peace in your everlasting repose. You have generously shared your talents with the world, and though you’re gone, your impact will continue to resonate. I can only speculate about the beautiful reunion happening in heaven today. Let the celestial choir gather and celebrate in harmony! 🤗🌟

In 1970, Cissy decided to embark on a solo journey, leaving the band behind, and she subsequently put out numerous studio albums. Among these, she produced two Grammy-winning albums: Face to Face (1996) and He Leadeth Me (1997).

In an interview with Jet Magazine in 1988, she reflected on finding success in her later years.

She expressed that many accomplishments in her life have happened later on, feeling as though a fresh chapter in her career is beginning. She’s content with how she structured and experienced her life, and takes great pride in the person she has evolved into.

In addition to this, she penned down three books: “He Leadeth Me” published in 1997, “How Sweet the Sound: My Life with God and Gospel” from 1998, and “Remembering Whitney: A Mother’s Story of Life, Loss and the Night the Music Stopped,” which came out in 2013.

Cissy, who is the mother of three children, enthusiastically backed her daughter Whitney’s professional journey, going as far as featuring alongside her in music videos such as ‘I’m Every Woman’ and ‘Greatest Love of All’.
